Oculus Quest is a virtual reality headset that was developed by Oculus VR, a subsidiary of Facebook . It is a stand-alone device with two 6- DoF - controllers ; a PC or game console is not required. The headset was launched in May 2019 in a 64 GB version and a 128 GB version. Two weeks after launch, Oculus announced that it had sold $ 5 million in content for the Oculus Quest.

history

At the Oculus Connect 3 conference in 2016, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Oculus was working on a standalone version of the Oculus Rift, codenamed Santa Cruz.

At Oculus Connect 4 the following year, Oculus announced that it would ship developer kits in 2018. The associated controllers would be similar to the touch controllers on the Oculus Rift.

In 2018, Oculus announced at the Connect 5 conference that the device would cost $ 399 and be called Oculus Quest. In 2019 it was announced at the F8 conference that the Quest would be delivered on May 21, 2019.

hardware

The Oculus Quest follows a similar concept to the Oculus Go , but has a better graphics chip and active cooling. The headset weighs 571 g (for comparison: the first headset from Oculus, the Oculus Rift , weighed 470 g). The battery life is specified as approx. 2-3 hours.

Optics: screen and lenses

The Oculus Quest uses two OLED displays, each with a resolution of 1440 × 1600 and a refresh rate of 72 Hz. Visual artifacts such as bundles of rays are less pronounced, but are still visible in high-contrast scenes. It has a manual viewing distance sanpassung.

Oculus Insight

Like the Rift S, the Oculus Quest has an optical tracking system called Oculus Insight. The system is based on four wide-angle cameras that are located at the corners of the headset in order to locate it spatially.

Revised touch controller

The Oculus Quest uses the same controllers as the Oculus Rift S. They are similar to the Rift's touch controllers.

equipment

The Oculus Quest has built-in speakers, but Oculus also offers in-ear headphones. Oculus also sells a carrying case.

software

Oculus launched the headset with over 50 titles, including new and popular games like Beat Saber , VRChat , Superhot VR, Moss, and Robo Recall . Some games like Racket: Nx , Rec Room and VRChat allow cross-platform multiplayer modes.

Passthrough mode

The Oculus Passthrough mode is a feature of the Oculus Quest that allows the user to view their real environment in stereoscopic black and white through the built-in lower two cameras. The passthrough mode is used in conjunction with the Oculus Quest security system (the Guardian). If the user leaves his predefined play area, the headset switches from the view of the currently displayed virtual environment to passthrough mode. If you move too far from the defined game area, the passthrough mode switches off. A warning then appears. It is also possible to activate the passthrough mode manually by double tapping the headset, if this has been activated in the settings beforehand.

Oculus Link

In November 2019, Oculus Link was released as an extension of firmware version 11, which enables PC VR games and applications to be projected onto the Oculus Quest via a conventional USB Type C cable. Games and applications from the Oculus Store and the Steam VR library can be used. The Oculus Quest became a hybrid device that can be used wirelessly as well as wired.

Hand tracking

According to Oculus Connect 6, hand tracking via software should be enabled by software at the beginning of 2020. On December 9, 2019, Oculus announced the release of first hand tracking demos and an update to the Oculus SDK that integrates hand tracking. The demos were then released on December 11, 2019 together with firmware version 12.0. These extensions allow users to interact with their hands in virtual reality without using an additional controller. The posture and the position of the hand are recorded and interpreted by the built-in cameras. The system is supported by an artificial intelligence integrated by Oculus .
