Superhot is a first-person shooter from 2016. In contrast to other genre representatives, the game only does not continue in slow motion if the player is moving or looking around. This enables the player to proceed more tactically and strategically , so that the game also contains elements of a strategy game and stealth computer game . The game was initially released for Windows , Mac OS and Linux , later also for the game consoles Xbox One , PlayStation 4 , Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia .

action

The player plays a fictional version of himself, sits in front of a DOS prompt and receives a message from a friend to start the game superhot.exe . After the player has played the game for some time, it crashes and the friend then sends a new exe file that has fixed the errors .

The gaming behavior of the player is monitored by the "system" and gives the player tasks later in the game, such as ensuring that the friend ends the game. The system's warnings get worse over time and the player is forced to go to their own in-game house. The character itself is connected to a virtual reality headset and later wakes up due to a head injury. The player is then prompted again to quit the game immediately.

If the player decides to continue playing, the system will encourage them to play more and more. The player finds a laboratory in the game that enables him to merge with the game and digitizes his mind (“ Mind uploading ”).

Gameplay

The game is presented in a minimalist-artistic style in which the enemies are shown in red, weapons in black and the surroundings in gray and white. The player himself plays from the first person perspective . The game will run in slow motion when the player is not moving or looking around. The faster the player moves or looks around, the faster the game goes. The levels themselves are usually kept short.

The player has a gun at the beginning of each level and has to shoot down all red enemies in a level. For this he can also collect ammunition that is distributed in a level, since ammunition is usually scarce.

The red-colored opponents, on the other hand, try to shoot the player and so the player has to avoid the bullets in order not to die and have to restart the level. The trajectories of the balls are also marked in red. In movies, this effect is also known as bullet time .

The game has a campaign mode with about 30 levels. Later in the game, other weapons such as explosives, melee weapons and throwable objects such as billiard balls are available and opponents learn to avoid shots. The time is also slowed down by jumps.

Development and publication

The game designer Piotr Iwanicki presents Superhot at the Game Developers Conference 2016

The game originated as a free browser game at a game jam in 2013, where participants had seven days to develop a first-person shooter. Due to the great attention that the game received, the developers started a Kickstarter campaign in May 2014 to finance further development and released the game on the Steam Greenlight early access platform . The campaign ended with $ 230,000 raised. The game was developed in the Unity engine .

The finished game was released on February 25, 2016 for Windows , Linux and MacOS on Steam . A Collector's Edition was released in stores in March 2016. The Xbox One version was released on May 3, 2016 and the PlayStation 4 version on July 21, 2017.

The game was later optimized for virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift , HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR . An early prototype of Superhot for VR was unveiled at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014 and presented as a bullet-time experience like in the movie Matrix . For temporary exclusivity for the Oculus Rift helped Oculus VR in the financing of the development of the game. The VR version for the Oculus Rift was released on December 5, 2016 and for the HTC Vive on May 25, 2017. The PlayStation VR version followed in July of the same year. On April 30, 2019 a version for the Oculus Quest was released.

The game is included in Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass PC. The paid download extension Superhot: Mind Control Delete , which was released in early 2018, lets the player learn more about the plot of the game and chat with mysterious chat partners.

In early 2018, the developers released a card game about Superhot , which was funded by a Kickstarter campaign in 2017. In May 2018 a special version for the Japanese market was announced. The game known as Superhot JP was developed by GameTomo and replaces parking garages and server centers with karaoke bars, dojos and the back alleys of Tokyo .

When it was released, the game was hailed as an innovation in the first person shooter genre, which has had little originality in the recent past. The game shows itself to be subtle and artistic and leaves the player puzzling and puzzling. Despite the rather strategic approach, the player feels like an action hero, which leads to players arguing whether it is a puzzle game or an action game . The ratings of this genre mix were mostly positive. The controls and the challenging level of difficulty were also praised. The game's slow motion concept has been compared to the Matrix film series and the Max Payne computer game .

On the other hand, the short campaign with the short levels, weaknesses in the AI and game physics, weaknesses in the narrative structure, the little music and the lack of German translation were criticized.

Sales figures

According to data analytics firm Superdata, the VR version was the top-selling VR game with sales of $ 2.56 million for the PC version and $ 1.06 for the PlayStation version.

In April 2019, sales of the VR version topped the original version with over 800,000 units sold.
