SXSW Gaming Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SXSW Gaming Awards is a gaming award that has been presented since 2014 and is presented as part of the South by Southwest in Austin , Texas .

history

Video games have been part of the SXSW within the SXSW Interactive division since 2006 . In order to be able to cover the video game area at the event, Screenburn was founded this year , which was given its current name - SXSW Gaming - in 2013 .

Matthew Crump , a well-known game developer, joined the SXSW team in 2012 and worked on organizing an awards ceremony for the 2014 SXSW Festival. The SXSW Gaming Awards were announced in September 2013 and presented in fifteen categories. Crump, founder of the awards, died unexpectedly just before the first awards ceremony, so that the event organizers the category Cultural Innovation in Gaming in Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award renamed. In the years that followed, other categories were added to the award ceremony.

format

Game developers and game publishers must have submitted their potential candidates to the festival organizers within a specified time window. The games proposed for nomination must be published within the previous calendar year - if the awards were first presented in 2014, the games must have been launched in the previous year. The festival organizers and a committee consisting of experts from the game industry will select the five best games for each category from all entries. The winner of each category will then be determined in a public vote.

The exception to this is the Gamer's Voice Awards : In this category, only indie games that were published in the previous or the same year are allowed. In contrast to the other categories, the Gamer's Awards allow games to be proposed by people outside the committee. The committee in turn selects the best games from the proposed entries after a one-time playthrough, which are nominated in this category. The nominated games will be made available to play at the festival so that festival goers can select the winner.

The award ceremony will take place towards the end of the SXSW Festival.
