action
The player controls Ori, a white guardian spirit of the forest. Long ago, in a storm that started a chain of disastrous events, Ori was separated from the Spirit Tree and adopted and raised by the bearish creature Naru. The prologue shows how the ghost tree calls to Ori many years later and then the Nibel forest (the place where the game takes place) is dying. Naru dies for lack of food, which makes Ori an orphan again. Ori goes out into the forest full of sadness and without hope until it loses its strength and it dies. With the last of its strength, the ghost tree revives Ori so that it can go on a search to restore the Nibel forest to its former glory. Right at the beginning Ori finds a being of light called Being, which reveals itself as the light and eyes of the spirit tree, and from then on guides and protects Ori on its mission. Ori is very weak at first and cannot attack enemies herself, so this part is taken over by Sein. As the adventure progresses, Ori gains more and more skills, making it possible to explore new areas.
Gameplay
The player has to maneuver the little forest spirit Ori through visually very differently designed, interconnected areas such as a forest, a grotto, various tunnel systems and swamps, a volcano etc. in order to save the individual areas of the game world from decay. To do this, the player must find an element in each sector and bring it back to its place in a shrine. This becomes more and more difficult due to increasingly complex passages and demanding movement sections as well as puzzles. At the beginning of the game, Ori has next to no skills other than a simple jump and the weak beam of light from his floating companion, but gradually the forest spirit receives a variety of upgrades through story progress, collecting skill points and activating elemental artifacts. Save points can be freely set - except in a few insecure or moving sections - and also serve as access to the talent tree. However, using memory points costs energy.
The focus of the game is on challenging puzzles and tricky level sections. The most important unique selling point of the game, however, is the acoustic and graphic representation of the course of the game. Moon Studios wanted to create an audiovisual experience. The story is clearly in the foreground and ultimately represents a playful but dark fairy tale to play by yourself, which should be experienced as coherently and atmospherically as possible. Best times, records, scores or other interests are clearly in the background.
The game can be played on the PC with the keyboard, but a gamepad is recommended for an optimal gaming experience.
reception
The game received mostly positive reviews, Metacritic determined a rating of 88 points, based on 73 (Xbox) and 12 (PC) reviews.
