Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (short often PUBG ) is a multiplayer - shooter , which the Blue Hole is developed -Studio PUBG Corporation and marketed. The game was on March 23, 2017 as Steam - Early Access title for Windows released. On December 20, 2017, the early access phase of the PC version was ended and version 1.0 was released. With the additional title Game Preview Edition , a pre-release version for the Xbox One was released on December 12, 2017. On March 19, 2018, a mobile version called PUBG Mobile for iOS and Android was released worldwide . A console conversion for the Xbox One was released on September 4, 2018 and for the PlayStation 4 on December 7, 2018.

Surname

Brendan Greene was offered by the South Korean development studio Bluehole to implement his ideas as a game designer for a new game in the Battle Royal genre . He used the nickname "PlayerUnknown" in online games. This is where the name "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" came from. The name is consistently capitalized for marketing purposes because, according to Greene, "it just looks better".

Game content

Game world

There are several secluded game worlds. These are mostly dystopian , fallow places.

The oldest map is the remote and extensive island of Erangel with Eastern European geography, which is based on brutalism and the Soviet Union in the 1950s . Russian graffiti and brand marks can be found on houses and objects. The world covers a size of about 64 square kilometers . With version 4.0, the map was revised in mid-2019. The old map can still be played as "Erangel Classic" in custom matches.

At the end of 2017, PUBG was supplemented by another card called Miramar . The flora (especially Joshua Trees ) corresponds to the US-American-Mexican deserts, place names, graffiti and brandmarks are Spanish. Calendar pages on walls refer to the year 1963.

In June 2018, the third Sanhok card was added, vegetation and place names give a Southeast Asian flair.

In December 2018, the snow-covered Vikendi map was installed. The cold climate is similar to the conditions in Scandinavia or Siberia. Some new gameplay elements such as snow trails have also been added with the map.

The play zone of the open world game world becomes smaller in certain time intervals and the player suffers damage if he is outside the defined area. In the game world itself there are abandoned houses, streets, forests and villages. Various items of equipment such as weapons, rucksacks, helmets or bulletproof vests are located at defined points on the map, mostly in houses or covered regions.

Game principle and game mechanics

The principle is based on the Japanese film and manga Battle Royale . The player lands with a parachute from an airplane on a remote island. There he has to try to survive as long as possible. The playable character can be freely designed beforehand. A circular border becomes smaller at certain time intervals and causes damage to players if they are not yet within the safe area. This will direct the players to a random point on the map. Before this, the upcoming reduction is already indicated by a marker on the minimap . The game is limited to multiplayer mode . Alone or as a team of two or four, you fight against up to 100 other players. There are different weapons, vehicles, clothing and other equipment that can be found in the game world. Rare weapons and items are sent out via so-called air drops, which are randomly placed in the game world, and often cause battles between players. Alternatively, it is also possible to play in the first-person view instead of the third-person view . The winner is the player or team that is last left. An average round lasts around 30 minutes, but varies greatly between the different skills of the players and the chance factor of equipment. After a game, players may receive a. based on their killings and survival time experience points that they can use for purely visual character improvements. Purely optical items such as clothing can also be traded on the Steam marketplace. PlayerUnkown's Battleground is, like other Battle Royale games, a Games as a Service game, ie the game is expanded to include new content in certain time periods (so-called seasons). These are, for example, new maps, game modes , a new Battle Pass or new skins . The current season 6 started in January 2020.

Custom games and mods

With so-called custom game functions, it is possible for players to open matches with their own rules and to create their own game modes. One of them is z. B. a zombie mode, which was later officially implemented by the developers. Most of the players take on the role of a zombie and have to try to infect the surviving players. The zombies have the advantage of being outnumbered and the survivors have the option of using weapons, equipment and bandages.

Over time, other game modes such as team deathmatch , an esports mode, a training mode and a war mode were introduced. In war mode, the player can choose his equipment before the start of the game and does not have to collect it on the field. In addition, the character can be revived after each death, in contrast to the Battle Royale mode, in which the game is then over.

development

Early Access

Brendan Greene, the game's lead developer, has already gained experience as a computer game modder. He wrote a battle royale modification for the computer games ArmA 2 and ArmA 3 and helped develop the battle royale part of H1Z1 , which was later published as an independent version under the title H1Z1: King of Kill . For the project, he teamed up with the Bluehole development studio and moved to Seoul to work on the project on site. First development work on PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds started in 2016. The closed beta phase started on February 24, 2017. The game was first published on March 23, 2017 as an early access title. It was developed in Unreal Engine 4 . Shortly after the release of the Early Access version, the developers announced that they would take stronger action against cheats . After three months, more than 25,000 cheaters were banned. As of June 6, 2017, it has been possible to receive exclusive in-game content when purchasing a Twitch Premium Membership. In July 2017, Bluehole teamed up with the social network Facebook and will from now on broadcast exclusive matches there that are organized and played by Bluehole.

Error (should in weekly updates Engl .: bugs ) are fixed and monthly updates of new content and greater performance and server issues to be resolved.

publication

The release was originally planned for August 2017, but was postponed to the end of 2017. On December 12, 2017 a Game Preview Edition for the Xbox One and on December 20, 2017 the PC version 1.0 was officially released. On March 19, 2018, a mobile version called PUBG Mobile for iOS and Android was released worldwide . A console conversion for the Xbox One was released on September 4, 2018 and for the PlayStation 4 on December 7, 2018. On October 10, 2019, a graphically limited version of the game called PUBG Lite was released, which should also run smoothly on mid-range hardware. A beta took place in Thailand in January. Crossplay between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 was introduced in October 2019.

reception

Reviews

PC Games keeps the concept for the shooter genre innovative and evaluates the game through the other players, the randomness of the objects, the soundscape, the individual weapons and objects and the pressure of the approaching limit of the game creating tension and thrills . The game is also compared with DayZ , a similar open-world shooter, and the atmosphere is praised. Even newbies to shooters shouldget along wellwith tactics and skill . However, the price is described as rather high and long-term motivation is questioned due to the lack of goals. In addition, they complain of frustration due to random decisions. Many players also have performance problems in the Early Access version.

GameStar sees the reason in the hype u. a. in the experience of the developer and the zeitgeist . In contrast to the fast-paced H1Z1 : King of Kill , you have more time to find equipment and there are more weapons and equipment. However, a lot ofthe game mechanics are similar. The fights are also described as more demanding and more tactical. Playing in a team is also praised and highlighted and GameStar relies on future improvements and support for mods . Is criticized z. B. the performance or things that are still illogical.

IGN gave the game a 9/10 rating. Rock, Paper, Shotgun describes the game as a tactical shooter sandbox , story generator and horror game rolled into one, which represents one of the highest highs in the history of multiplayer computer games. The game is largely positively received by gamers on Steam.

The game's popularity has declined in recent years, which is reflected in the number of players and its distribution on video platforms. The number of players was over 1.1 million in April 2018, while today it is only under 250,000. The reason given for this is that errors are ignored and attempts are made to conceal them with new content.

Sales figures

After the first six days in Early Access , over 11 million US dollars were sold. A few days later, the game reached number 1 on the Steam sales charts, where it lasted for several weeks, and by the beginning of April 2017 had already sold over a million units. At the beginning of May 2017, over 2 million copies had already been sold with sales of over 60 million US dollars. The sales figures reached over ten million units by September 2017. In 2018, sales were $ 310 million.

Fundraiser

On May 4, 2017, the developers started a fundraising campaign in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds , in which 128 live streamers from North America and Europe took part. The event was broadcast on the live stream platform Twitch . A total of US $ 200,000 was donated to the Gamers Outreach Foundation, a charity that works to make hospital stays and treatment better for children. Half of that comes from the community and the other half from the developer.

Microtransactions

The developers are planning a monetization for purely optical objects, so-called Loot Crates (in German: Lootboxes ), which can only be opened with a purchased key in order to ensure long-term support for the game. Already in the early access phase were microtransactions introduced. Part of the community reacted negatively and triggered a shit storm . Greene commented on this function and explained the step by stating that this would have to be tested in Early Access, that it was purely optical, that you can also trade via the Steam marketplace in an emergency and apologized for the unsuccessful communication.

Lawsuit against Epic Games

In March 2018, it was announced that Bluehole had filed a lawsuit against the developer of the similar game Fortnite in January 2018 . According to the developer, Fortnite is said to be a structural copy of Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. The lawsuit is limited to South Korea. In June 2018, the lawsuit was withdrawn for reasons unknown.

Country bans

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, along with other battle royale games , was banned in India , Iraq and Nepal due to post-government negative influence on young people. As a result, there were at least 10 arrests in India. The ban in Nepal was lifted in April 2019.

E-sports

The first “PUBG Invitational Tournament” was held at Gamescom 2017 in Cologne. 92 players from 19 countries entered the competition with total prize money of US $ 350,000. The event was hosted by publisher Bluehole and the Electronic Sports League between August 23 and 26. Up to 5.6 million viewers saw the tournament on the Chinese live e-streaming provider PandaTV.

In November 2017, Intel hosted a championship on the game in Oakland with prize money of 200 thousand US dollars. The PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds World Championship will take place in November 2019.

There are also other national or international tournaments, such as the PUBG ESL Championship, the PUBG Europe League in Berlin or the PUBG Nations Cup in Seoul . The international league was the PUBG Global Series until the league was discontinued in late 2019 and was replaced by a series of tournaments. This was due to poor communication, poor tournament planning and poor revenue sharing.

Records

Most players online at the same time on the Steam platform

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds beat Dota 2's record on September 17, 2017 , which was just over 1.3 million. Since then the number of players has increased steadily. The new record is now 3,236,027 simultaneously active players since Steam reports statistics about it.
