The computer game concept Cross Play (also Cross-Platform Play , Cross-Platform Play or cross-platform games called) in describing computer game that way , with players on other platforms the same game with- simultaneously or to play against each other.

criticism

Due to the various control and performance advantages, a player on a certain platform can have an advantage without special optimization of a game. In addition, it is generally easier to use cheats and mods on a computer than on a game console or smartphone . The CEO Guillaume Boucher-Vidal of Nine Dots Studios sees crossplay as a danger for developers of smaller multiplayer titles and indie studios that they will no longer be able to keep up with the competition and that the big games will gain even more market share as a result. Nevertheless, many players would like crossplay for future games so that they can also play with social contacts from other platforms. Another advantage of crossplay are more full servers, which enable faster matchmaking , as well as the transfer of items and player data collected in the game.

Especially on the PlayStation 4 , more crossplay support for games is desired by gamers and developers, which Sony has had a hard time with so far. At the end of 2018, Fortnite, among other things, was also supported in a beta phase on the PlayStation 4, which gave many people hope that the feature will be expanded to other games in the future. On October 5, 2019, Sony completed the beta phase for crossplay on the PlayStation 4, offering developers more options for crossplay.
