Smite is one of Hi-Rez Studios developed free-to-play - computer game in the genre MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) for Windows , macOS , PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Nintendo switch . Unlike in most MOBAs (such as League of Legends ), the game is not shown in an isometric perspective , but in a third-person view . The player takes on the role of a mythological figure, often a deity , of various polytheistic religions in order to use their abilities and tactical maneuvers to fight against other players and computer-controlled opponents.

Gameplay

There are various game modes in Smite, the most popular and challenging of which is called “Conquest”. The players are divided into two teams of five players each. After choosing his god, the player enters an almost axially symmetrical map. In the base of your own team is the titan that has to be defended. This is protected by three phoenixes , behind which the base is lost in three ways (so-called lanes ). Between these are smaller paths, the so-called jungle . There are four towers on each lane - two of your own and two of your opponent. In addition to the ten players, there are also computer-controlled minions on the lanes , which also belong to the teams. By killing opposing gods and minions , the player gains experience and gold , which is used to buy items to improve the values of his god. The object of the game is to destroy the opposing team's Titan. An average game of "conquest" lasts between half an hour and an hour. However, this can take longer in particularly balanced games.

The gods are divided into five different classes. There are protectors who can primarily endure a lot of damage and who can disturb opponents when they attack by means of obstacles (so-called crowd control or cc ), warriors who have more offensive traits than protectors and still have relatively high defense values, assassins, who are particularly attract attention due to agility and a lot of damage potential, hunters whose attack values gain the upper hand especially in the later course of the game, and magicians whose low defense values are compensated for by high damage and cc skills.

Game modes

Arena (arena)

Two teams of five players each fight in a large arena to reduce the opposing tickets to zero.

Skirmish (Joust)

Two teams of three players each fight on a map with only one lane and side jungle to defeat the opposing Titan.

Conquest (conquest)

Two teams of five players each fight on three lanes and a large jungle to defeat the opposing Titan.

Conflict (clash)

Two teams of five players each fight on two lanes to defeat the opposing Titan.

Assault mode

Two teams of five players each fight in a lane without a jungle to defeat the opposing Titan. What is special here is that the players cannot return to their well to regenerate health and mana or to buy new items. The only exception is the death of a player. In addition, each player is assigned a random character at the beginning of the round.

Match of the day (MOTD)

This mode changes daily. Special features result, among other things, from the wishes of the players who suggest certain game modes. This includes modifications of well-known modes that appeal with additional settings, such as a lot of starting gold, maximum level at the beginning of the game, or skills that are available again sooner.

Siege (victories)

Two teams of four players each fight on two lanes with jungle to defeat the opposing Titan.

Deities

In each game, the players choose a character. All playable characters in Smite come from a mythology , polytheistic religion , legend , cult or myth . implementation

Each playable god in Smite has four individual skills that the player can actively use, as well as a passive ability that offers a permanent effect. The skills are chosen in such a way that they relate to the tradition of the protagonists. One example is Poseidon's signature trident , which can be activated as an ability to triple its standard attacks. Another special feature of a MOBA is the fact that ranged attacks are considered flying projectiles that can be "intercepted" by units of the opposing team. This results in another interesting dimension in terms of the depth of play of protectors. Since special lines of text were implemented for each god by means of voice actors, an attempt is also made in this way to make the gods more authentic. Both basic aspects, such as accents , and references to the individual myths are used. For example, if the player succeeds in killing Athena with Medusa , the Gorgon triumphantly proclaims "Sweet, sweet revenge!" ( Eng. "Sweet, sweet revenge"), an allusion to the Medusa story in Greek mythology, in which Athena attaches Medusa's severed head to her shield .

Smite receives mostly positive reviews from critics. The third-person perspective is particularly emphasized.

The aggregator GameRankings , which collects test reports and determines an average value from the ratings, calculated an average of 87.62% for the Windows version, 80.00% for the PlayStation 4 and 78% for the Xbox version. The website Metacritic determines similar values.

IGN's Leah B. Jackson says she is delighted with the wide variety of different gods and the detailed models. Keith Milburn from NZGamer reports some UI issues on the PlayStation 4 version that made the game less fluid. He also praises the mixture of elements in Smite with PvE to create a pleasant chaos, which scores with MMO-like elements. Wes Fenlon from PCGamer criticizes the low entry barriers for ranked games and emphasizes Smite's moderate willingness to give new players an easy entry into the MOBA genre. Paulmichael Contreras from PlayStation Life Style describes the free-to-play model from Smite as a fair system without falling into the area of "pay-to-win". Champions that can be bought extra fit in well with the game balance without being clearly better than others, especially since paying for game content is just an additional option. The implementation on the various platforms is also highlighted.

E-sports

The game features mainly in North America and Europe have an active e-sports scene. The most important tournament is the annual world championships. In terms of the prize money paid out, Smite ranks 12th among all video games .
