Legends

The trip to the west

In the Chinese novel Journey to the West , Erlang Shen was sent by Bodhisattva Guanyin and the Jade Emperor because of his enormous supernatural powers to seize the rebellious Monkey King Sun Wukong after hundreds of thousands of heavenly soldiers were unable to defeat him.

Enraged by the disrespect of Sun Wukong, Erlang and his six fellow combatants embarked on a long and equal fight in which both met with equal strength. Erlang struggled with his divine trident while Sun Wukong was using his magical staff and as soon as Erlang enlarged his body, Sun Wukong enlarged his body as well. This continued until both grew immeasurably and the Monkey King finally transformed back when he noticed how much fear and damage the two of them caused at this size. So he fled from Erlang and his comrades, turned into a little sparrow and hid in a tree. After Erlang's comrades couldn't find him and thought he had fled, Erlang Shen used his all-seeing third eye and discovered the Monkey King in the body of a bird sitting on a tree. The two then dueled each other in numerous different transformations, from kites to fish.

Finally, Sun Wukong turned unnoticed into the shape of his opponent, fled to his temple and was able to outsmart the residents there. When Erlang Shen heard this, he followed the Monkey King into the temple and fought with him again. Here Erlang Shen got help from Bodhisattva Guanyin and Lao Tzu , who brought with him his former magical weapon, resistant to fire and water, capable of transformation and known as diamond jade. With her he met Sun Wukong and brought him down, whereupon the Monkey King fled, but this time stopped by the hound of Erlang Shen by a bite in the calf. So Erlang Shen and the deities managed to finally capture and capture Sun Wukong.
