Hua Mulan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hua Mulan ( Chinese  花 木蘭  /  花 木兰 , Pinyin Huā Mùlán ) is the heroine of an old Chinese folk poem (so-called Yuefu ), which was probably written between 420 and 589 AD and was only recorded in writing a few centuries later.

The protagonist, a girl from a good family named Mulan, is said to have lived in the 5th century AD and disguised herself as a man to go to war in place of her father. The earliest sources of the Mulan ballad suggest that she probably lived during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). In another version of the legend, however, Mulan is described as the concubine of Emperor Yang , who ruled from 604–617.
