Mulan is an American adventure film set to release in 2020. It is based on the Chinese folk ballad Hua Mulan and is an adaptation of the 1998 Disney cartoon of the same name . Directed by Niki Caro and written by Elizabeth Martin , Laura Hynek , Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver . It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures . The title role is played by the Chinese actress Liu Yifei .

After the theatrical release was postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Mulan is scheduled to either open in cinemas at the beginning of September 2020, depending on the country, or be available for a fee via Disney + .

action

Hua Mulan is the eldest daughter of a highly honored warrior. She has temperament, dedication and is quick on her feet. When the emperor orders that a man from every family must serve in the army when the Huns invade the empire, Mulan, disguised as a man, stands in for her sick father. She takes the name Hua Jun and becomes one of China's greatest warriors.

production

Pre-production

Disney showed an interest in filming Mulan for real back in the 2000s. Zhang Ziyi was cast in the lead and Chuck Russell would direct the film before the project was canceled.

In 2015 the planning of a real film began again. Chris Bender and JC Spink were announced as producers, while Elizabeth Martin and Laura Hynek would write the script. The first script featured some white characters, including the main male character. But since this was criticized by numerous fans of the cartoon classic, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver , who already wrote the scripts for Planet of the Apes: Prevolution and Jurassic World , were commissioned to revise the script. In addition to Chris Bender, Jake Weiner and Jason Reed were announced as producers. Eventually it was confirmed that all characters will be embodied by actors of Asian origin.

Disney initially tried to find a director from Asia. The group initially thought of Ang Lee , a Taiwanese film director and two-time Oscar winner for best director, but turned him down in October 2016. Disney then met with Jiang Wen before New Zealander Niki Caro was hired to direct on February 14, 2017, making Mulan the second Disney film with a female director on a budget of over $ 100 million.

occupation

Liu Yifei, 2016

As the first actress, the Chinese Liu Yifei was cast for the title role of Hua Mulan on November 29, 2017 . On April 11, 2018, Donnie Yen was announced as Commander Tung , Mulan's teacher and mentor. One day later, the cast was expanded to include Jet Li as Chinese Emperor , Xana Tang as Mulan's sister Hua Xiu and Gong Li as Xian Lang , a powerful witch. Utkarsh Ambudkar was on May 23, for the role of trick fraudster Skatch confirmed while Ron Yuan as Sergeant Qiang was announced, who leads the Imperial Regiment in second place. The New Zealand newcomer Yoson On was on June 6 for the male lead of recruits Chen Honghui committed and Chum Ehelepola as Ramtish , Skatchs accomplice. Jason Scott Lee was announced on July 26th for the role of Bori Khan , a warrior and leader who seeks revenge for his father's death. On August 15, Jimmy Wong and Doua Moua were sustained as Soldiers Ling and Po , and on September 20, Chen Tang succeeded as Soldier Yao . Tzi Ma embodies Hua Zhou , Mulan's father, whose place she takes in the imperial army. Filming

Filming of the film officially began on August 13, 2018 and ended in November of that year. Mulan was filmed in China and New Zealand .

Marketing and Publishing

A theatrical release was originally planned for November 2, 2018. However, in March 2018 it became known that the US launch date had been postponed to March 27, 2020. The day before, on March 26, 2020, the film should start in German cinemas. A first picture of leading actress Yifei as Mulan was released on August 13, 2018, as filming began. A first teaser trailer followed on July 7, 2019. On March 12, 2020, it was announced that the US theatrical release would be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The new US launch date was initially dated July 24, 2020. In Germany, the film should start in cinemas a day earlier. In June 2020, the US start date was postponed a third time to August 2020 until this was finally canceled. As a result, it was announced that the type of publication will differ from country to country, as there would be a risk of illegal pirated copies if the start dates were shifted worldwide. In countries such as the United States, Canada and New Zealand, where Disney + has already started, the film will be available from September 4, 2020 for around 30 US dollars via the streaming service. For other countries such as China, where the cinemas have reopened, a regular release is planned.

Relationship to cartoon

Some central elements were changed for the remake. There is no singing and the little dragon Mushu will not appear in the film either. The main male character of Captain Li Shang is replaced by the recruit Chen Honghui and the role of Mulan's instructor embodies the newly created figure of Commander Tung. The antagonist in the cartoon was the Hun leader Shan Yu instead of the witch Xian Lang and the warrior Bori Khan. In addition, with Sergeant Qiang, the con artists Skatch and Ramtish and Mulan's sister Hua Xiu, a few more new characters were added. The title character's family also bears the name Hua instead of Fa, which corresponds more to the ballad.
