Aladdin is an American fantasy - Musical by Guy Ritchie , produced by Walt Disney Pictures by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich . Ritchie also wrote the script with John August . The film is a live version of the cartoon of the same name from 1992 and, like this one, is based on the story Aladin and the magic lamp from the fairy tales from 1001 nights . The Canadian newcomer Mena Massoud embodies the title role .

action

A small boat with a family of four is sailing on the sea. The two children look enviously over at a large and luxurious ship. The father then wants to show them the advantages of their little boat and tells them the story of Aladdin, the princess and the lamp:

In the Arab city of Agrabah, Aladdin and his monkey Abu struggle through life and steal the things he needs.

The young man meets a supposed servant of the princess on his forays. He visits her in the palace in the evening and gives her back a bracelet that the monkey Abu has stolen from her. On the way home, Aladdin is captured by the vizier Jafar. He reveals to him that Aladdin spoke to the princess personally. Aladdin is supposed to fetch a lamp for Jafar from the so-called miracle cave, with the help of which Jafar wants to usurp control over Agrabah.

Aladdin finds the lamp, but is locked in the cave. From the lamp he frees a genie, who introduces himself as the most powerful being in the universe. With his help, Aladdin, Abu and a magic carpet escape. Equipped with three wishes, Aladdin is enchanted to be a prince and wants to impress Jasmin and her father.

During the visit to the palace, Aladdin and Jasmin get closer, while Genie flirts with Dalia, Jasmin's servant. However, Jafar finds out about the young prince. Aladdin can only save his life with the help of the Djinnis and one other wish.

In a subsequent fight, Jafar can come to the lamp and Jinni wishes him to be Sultan of Agrabah and later the most powerful magician in the world. Aladdin points out to him that even as a great wizard, he is still only number two. Therefore, Jafar wishes with his last wish to be the most powerful being in the universe, whereby he is enchanted by the Djinni to another Djinni, locked in a lamp and banished to the miracle cave.

With his last wish, Aladdin decides against another attempt to become Jasmin's husband. Instead, he wishes for freedom for Djinni. Djinni then turns into a human. The Sultan of Agrabah decides that a woman can rule the city too. Jasmin then has the law struck that she can only marry one prince. Then Jasmin and Aladdin marry, as do Jinni and Dalia.

production

Mena Massoud , 2019

Before there were any official plans for this film, it was announced in July 2015 that Disney was working on a live action prequel for Aladdin called Genies . The film was supposed to tell the prehistory of the genie and show how it got into the lamp. However, the plans changed and it was decided to remake the well-known story.

On October 10, 2016, it was announced that Guy Ritchie would be filming a real-life version of Disney's Aladdin with Dan Lin as producer, based on a script by John August . The studio said the film would be "a sophisticated and untraditional" adaptation of the Aladdin story, which would retain many of the musical elements of the original film. As for the untraditional aspect, the film aims for a non-linear narrative.

For the real-life version, Disney wanted to cast the main roles with actors of oriental origin in order not to come under criticism for “white washings”. That is why the roles were advertised internationally.

The first actors for the film on July 15, 2017 were the Canadian-Egyptian newcomer Mena Massoud as the title character Aladdin , Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmin , and Will Smith as Jinni . Marwan Kenzari was announced on August 4th as the antagonist Jafar , while Nasim Pedrad played as Dalia , Jasmin 's maid and friend, a character newly created for the film. Numan Acar added to the cast on August 21 as Hakim , head of the palace guard and Jafar's right-hand man. On September 6th, Billy Magnussen was confirmed as Prince Anders , a potential husband for Jasmin and also a new character, and on September 7th, Navid Negahban followed as Sultan of Agrabah. Alan Tudyk was announced as spokesman for Jafar's parrot Iago on March 12, 2019 .

The shooting of the film began on September 6, 2017 the Longcross Studios in English Surrey . Part of the film was shot in Wadi Rum in Jordan . The work was completed on January 24, 2018.

The score was composed by Alan Menken , who already wrote the music for the original. He worked with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul on the remake .

synchronization

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Axel Malzacher on behalf of FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH , Berlin. Nina Schneider edited the lyrics on the basis of the German lyrics by Frank Lenart from 1992. The musical recordings and arrangements took place in the Jamzone Studios in Munich under the direction of Thomas Amper . Michael Pan speaks again the parrot Iago in Disney's productions.

Differences from the cartoon version

There are some differences in the film from the cartoon version . So the Sultan is much more serious and Jasmin's maid was invented especially for the real film. Jasmin is portrayed much more independently and does not let Jafar forbid her mouth in a chant sequence. In the cartoon, Jafar turns into a giant cobra , among other things , while here he turns his parrot into a gigantic version of himself (reminiscent of the bird Roch from the fairy tales from the Arabian Nights ). According to Aladdin's third wish, Jinni does not turn into a human being in the original cartoon, but remains in his usual form.
