Mena Massoud (born September 17, 1991 in Cairo , Egypt ) is an Egyptian- Canadian actor . He became known to a wide audience through the role of Jared Malik in the series Open Heart and as Tarek Kassar in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan . He received international attention in 2019 with his leading role as "Aladdin" in the Disney film of the same name .

life and career

Mena Massoud, the son of Coptic Christians, emigrated with his family from Egypt to Toronto (Canada) at the age of three and a half and lived there until he was 25.

At the age of 25, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Before that he had worked as a waiter to finance his move. A few months later he applied for the lead role of " Aladdin " in the Disney film of the same name .

After a few auditions in England , he finally prevailed against thousands of competitors. Most of the shooting took place in London . A few excerpts were filmed in Jordan . The other two main roles in the film are played by Will Smith ( Djinni ) and Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine).
