Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass (Original title: Alice Through the Looking Glass ) is an American adventure - fantasy film by James Bobin , based on the novel Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll , the sequel to Alice in Wonderland , which in 2010 rematched with Alice in Wonderland . Linda Woolverton wrote the script while Tim Burton , who directed the previous film, was the producer. The film was released in the USA on May 27, 2016, in Germany on May 25, 2016.

Alice Kingsleigh has inherited her father's ship and is returning with it after three years from a trade trip from China during which she has to assert herself against an attack by Malaysian pirates in the Strait of Malacca . Back home, she learns that her mother has given the house to Lord Hamish Ascot during her absence, who once asked for Alice's hand in vain. In order to get the house back, Alice is supposed to sign over her father's ship, the Wonder, to him. Disappointed and angry, she withdraws to a room of the Ascotts, where she takes refuge in wonderland through a mirror.

There her friends and the white queen are very worried about the hatter, who believes that his family, allegedly killed by the Jabberwocky, is still alive. The white queen says that only the return of the hatter's family could save his life. Alice has to go back in time with the help of the chronosphere, a kind of time machine that is in the hands of time . According to her, time is a "he". Alice wants to do everything possible to save her friend the hatter and goes to the Palace of Time , where she steals the chronosphere from him. Pursued by the time it takes for the chronosphere to survive, it goes back in time.

When Alice is attacked by "time" on the sea of ​​all time, she strays and, instead of the day of fear of terror, travels to the day on which Iracebeth is to be crowned queen, but due to her uncontrolled nature, she goes from her father to her younger sister Mirana is passed over in the line of succession . Iracebeth breaks with her family and swears vengeance on the hatter's family after they laughed at her because of her oversized head.

Further back in the past, Alice meets the hatter as a child and sees him seemingly being emotionally rejected by his father. It is the day on which the young Iracebeth has an accident in which her hatred of her sister is based. Through a lie from Mirana, Iracebeth is accused of theft by both mother; Iracebeth leaves the castle furious and will bump her head, which is why it will be huge in the future. Alice tries to prevent the accident by pushing the actual obstacle - a grandfather clock carried by frogs - aside with her body. Iracebeth, however, stumbles over the hem of her dress while running and bumps her head on a pedestal. Through this, Alice realizes that the past cannot be changed.

Suddenly Alice is surprised by Zeit, who asks her to give him back the chronosphere. Alice does not agree and escapes through a mirror back into the real world. There she wakes up in an institution and is supposed to be treated. Her mother explains to her that Hamish brought her here and that she talked weird on the way here, whereupon Alice realizes that she has lost the chronosphere. When the doctor is supposed to give her an injection, he anesthetizes himself with Alice's hand and she escapes and drives back to the Ascotts estate in a stolen carriage, where she escapes back to Wonderland with the found Chronosphere.

She travels to the day when the village of the Hatter family is destroyed by the Jabberwocky and the Hatter family appears to be killed. There she sees that the hatters survived but were captured by Iracebeth, the Red Queen, the Jabberwocky and their soldiers. Realizing that the hatter was right in his belief that his family was still alive, Alice travels back to the present. There the hatter lies dying, but recovers when Alice tells him that she believes him about his family. Alice the Hatter, Mirana and their friends make their way to the Red Queen's Castle to free the Hatter family. Once there, Alice and the hatter find his family, which is greatly reduced in size and held captive in an ant terrarium. The Red Queen captures all intruders in her castle. She takes the Chronosphere from Alice in order to travel back in time with her and her sister, to the day on which Iracebeth suffered the fatal accident. Mirana and Iracebeth reach the point in time when they, then still children, are confronted by their mother with accusations of theft, and Mirana puts her guilt on Iracebeth with a lie. When Iracebeth and her younger self meet, a time paradox arises that causes time to stand still. The whole of the lowlands is frozen. Included time herself and Alice's friends. Alice, who has escaped from her captivity, can bring the chronosphere back to Zeit's palace at the last second and thus prevent time from finally standing still.

Mirana then asks her sister for forgiveness for the fatal lie that she accepts. The two make up. The hatter is reunited with his family, and Alice travels back to her reality, where she appears just as her mother tries to sign the ship to Hamish. She leaves the decision about the ship to her mother, whereupon she refuses to sign the contract. Mother and daughter Kingsleigh set up a successful trading line to China with their ship.

On December 7, 2012, the industry journal Variety announced that a sequel to Alice in Wonderland was being developed, for which Linda Woolverton is again writing the script. At the end of May 2013, James Bobin was in discussion to direct the project, which at the time was operating under the working title Alice in Wonderland: Into the Looking Glass . In July 2013 it was announced that Johnny Depp would be back as a hatter, while in November the return of Mia Wasikowska was confirmed. The same month the release date was announced and Bobin was confirmed as director. On January 21, 2014, the title of the film was changed to Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass . The role of the antagonist Zeit went to Sacha Baron Cohen on the same day . Helena Bonham Carter confirmed her role in March 2014; in May Rhys Ifans was confirmed as Zanik Hightopp, the hatter's father.

The filming began on August 4, 2014 in the Shepperton Studios . It was then shot in the Gloucester Docks using the following historic ships: "Kathleen and May", "Irene", "Excelsior" and the "Earl of Pembroke", the latter being renamed "The Wonder" for the film. Filming ended on October 31, 2014.

On April 15, 2016, the official title song Just Like Fire by the American singer P! Nk was released.

Reviews

The critics of TV Spielfilm rated the film as a "fairytale spectacle full of effects". Compared to the first part, the film is “ prequel and sequel at the same time” and “a worthy sequel for everyone who liked the first part”. The 3D effects are however "inharmonious".

Die Welt wrote: “A product disappointment for every Carrollian.” Sacha Baron Cohen is praised as Die Zeit, but the film is considered too free, in particular Alice's feminist perspective and the shipping sequences are heavily criticized and described as too radical and overloaded. "Alan Rickman gives his last role."
