James Bobin (* 1972 in Abingdon , Oxfordshire , England ) is a British film director , television producer and screenwriter .

life and career

James Bobin grew up in Titchfield , near Fareham . He attended Titchfield Primary School and Portsmouth Grammar School . His father, David Bobin, works as a broadcaster for Sky Sports television . In 1995 he starred in the BBC Two television series Modern Times: Fatmates .

Bobin is best known for his work on the television series The 11 O'Clock Show and the Da Ali G Show . He was involved in the conception of the characters Ali G , Borat from the film of the same name and Brüno from the film of the same name . In 2003 and 2004 he wrote the screenplays and directed all 12 episodes of the second and third season of the TV show Da Ali G Show that on the cable channel HBO aired. He then came up with the comedy series Flight of the Conchords for HBO , which ran on it from 2007 to 2009. He was involved in the series as executive producer and directed eleven episodes himself.

His directorial feature film debut, The Muppets , a musical comedy written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller , received mostly positive reviews. He also directed the 2014 sequel, Muppets Most Wanted .

In July 2007, Bobin had a daughter.

Awards and nominations

For his work on the Da Ali G Show and Flight of the Conchords he was nominated for a total of eleven Emmy Awards in 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2009 and for three WGA awards in 2008.

In 2000 he received a nomination for The 11 O'Clock Show for the BAFTA Award in the category Best Comedy TV Series . In 2012 and 2013 he was nominated for another BAFTA Awaward and for a British Academy Children's Award for The Muppets .
