Benj Pasek (born June 9, 1985 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American film composer who received an Oscar for his work on the film La La Land in 2017 . Most of the time, Pasek works with Justin Paul .

Life

For the film La La Land by Damien Chazelle , Benj Pasek wrote the song City of Stars together with Justin Hurwitz and Justin Paul , which was named best film song at the Golden Globe Awards 2017 , as well as at the later Academy Awards in the same category.

With Paul he wrote, among other things, the song This Is Me for the film Greatest Showman by Michael Gracey . For this work, both were honored at the Golden Globe Awards 2018 . On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that This Is Me was in a shortlist of 70 songs from which the nominations for the Best Movie Song category at the 2018 Academy Awards were determined. The official nomination followed in January 2018. The song also received a nomination for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2018 .

Together with Justin Paul he wrote and composed the musical Dogfight - An Ugly Game , which is based on the US movie Dogfight .

In 2015, Dear Evan Hansen, written with Justin Paul , would premiere in Washington DC. In 2016 the piece hit Broadway .

In July 2017 it was announced that Alan Menken , who is composing the score for Aladdin , will be working with Pasek and Paul on this.
