Creation and publication

This Is Me was sung by Keala Settle , here at the premiere of the film Greatest Showman in Japan

The song This Is Me was written by Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for Michael Gracey's musical film Greatest Showman , sung by Keala Settle , who plays a bearded woman in the film, and is also featured on the film's soundtrack . The song also served as background music for several trailers for the film and was released in advance on October 26, 2017 by Atlantic Records , including on YouTube. A second song included on the soundtrack, The Greatest Show , was also written by Pasek and Paul and sung by Settle with Hugh Jackman , Zac Efron and Zendaya .

Justin Paul stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2017 that This Is Me should be accompanied by a banjo or ukulele and sung by another character, but the director has repeatedly pushed for an anthem for the curiosities in the film to show that they assert their identity and are ready to defend themselves against anyone who treats them badly. So the song was tailored to Lettie, the bearded lady.

Lyrics

The lyrics to This Is Me are about people who are outsiders to society but who have learned to proudly display their otherness in public.
