Keala Joan Settle (born November 5, 1975 in Lāʻie , Hawaii ) is an American theater and film actress and singer . She became internationally known in 2018 through the film Greatest Showman and in particular as the singer of the film song This Is Me , which was awarded a Golden Globe .

Keala Settle was born and raised in Hawaii, but her parents are originally from England and New Zealand. After school, she attended Southern Utah University . Then she was a studio musician and accompanist, including for Gladys Knight in Las Vegas . In the 2000s she also appeared in the US touring production stage of musical classics such as Hairspray and South Pacific .

The corpulent actress made her Broadway debut in 2010 in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert . Three years later she was on stage in Hands on a Hardbody . The conversion of a documentary film into a musical did not attract a large audience, but it met with great critical acclaim. Settle received the New York Theater World Award and was nominated for other acting awards, including the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2015 she played a smaller film role for the first time in the Meryl Streep film Ricki - Wie Familie so ist .

In 2017 she got a bigger role in the musical film Greatest Showman about the history of the Barnum Circus as "Bearded Lady". In addition to the film, the soundtrack was also a great success. It sold almost 6 million times worldwide and achieved many number one placements. The most successful single song was This Is Me , contributed by Keala Settle , which reached number 58 in the USA and into the top 10 of the charts in some countries and received many platinum awards. The song won a Golden Globe for best film song , and it was nominated for an award in the respective film song category at the Oscar and Grammy Awards .

As Keala , she released two EPs with cover songs in addition to the film , including Bird Set Free by Sia . This made it into the Heatseekers charts , but not the official US charts.
