Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman (born September 1, 1996 in Oakland , California ) is an American actress , singer and dancer . She was best known for the roles of Raquel "Rocky" Blue in the Disney series Shake It Up - Tanzen ist alles (2010-2013) and as a spy KC Cooper in the series KC Undercover (2015-2018).

Life

Zendaya was born under the name Zendaya Coleman on September 1, 1996 in Oakland, California, to Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu (Coleman). The name Zendaya comes from the Shona language and means "to say thank you". Her mother worked at the California Shakespeare Theater as a caretaker , which is why Zendaya got involved in acting at an early age. She appeared there in numerous smaller stage productions and often helped her mother out with her work. She later went to the Oakland School for the Arts , where she played in the musical Once on This Island . She also participated in the CalShakes Conservatory Program and attended the American Conservatory Theater . Zendaya was among other things in the plays Richard III. , Twelfth Night and As You Like to see. Today she lives with her family in Los Angeles . The singing , dancing and designing clothes among their biggest concerns.

Career

Zendaya began her professional career as a model for Macy’s , Mervyns and Old Navy . She starred alongside Stefanie Scott in a commercial for an iCarly toy. She was also seen as a background dancer in a commercial for Sears and danced in various music videos.

From 2010 to 2013, Zendaya starred in the Disney Channel Original Series Shake It Up - Dancing is Everything . She took on the role of the more well-behaved and always optimistic Raquel "Rocky" Blue , at the side of Bella Thorne , who played her best friend Cecelia "CeCe" Jones . She made her film debut in 2012 with Bella Thorne and Stefanie Scott in the Disney Channel original movie Beste FReinde . A television film based on the television series Shake It Up was shown in August 2012 in the form of a multi-part episode. Zendaya also got guest appearances on other Disney series, including My Sister Charlie , PrankStars and ANT: Attention Nature Talents .

From March to May 2013 Zendaya took part in the 16th season of Dancing with the Stars , the US version of Strictly Come Dancing . She and her partner, Valentin Chmerkovskiy , finished second after Kellie Pickler and her partner Derek Hough. At the age of 16, she was the youngest participant in the television program to date. In September 2013 she released her first own album under the title Zendaya .

After the Disney Channel Shake It Up in November 2013 after three seasons, she took over the lead role of Zoey Stevens in the Disney Channel Original Movie Remote Control in June 2014 . She also starred in the main role of Katy Cooper in the Disney pilot film Super Awesome Katy , which later received a series order for 2015 under the name KC Undercover . The series aired on the station from January 2015 to February 2018.

For the fall of 2014, the television station Lifetime planned to produce a television film about the late singer Aaliyah . Zendaya was supposed to slip into the role of the R&B singer and record four new songs. However, a few days later Zendaya decided to drop out of the project. Alexandra Shipp took her place in mid-July .

In 2017 she starred as Anne Wheeler in the biopic Greatest Showman about the circus pioneer PT Barnum . She was also seen in the 2017 comic book adaptation Spider-Man: Homecoming alongside Tom Holland in the role of Michelle "MJ" Jones . She played the same role in the 2019 sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home . In the series Euphoria she played the role of Rue . In the remake Dune by director Denis Villeneuve planned for December 2020 , Zendaya should be seen in the role of Chani.

In late June 2020 she became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
