background

Original version

The song was written by Mars and his co-songwriters Philip Lawrence, Brody Brown and James Fauntleroy. The latter acted as producers under their pseudonym Shampoo Press & Curl. Greg Phillinganes was on the keyboards . The song was recorded with the help of Charles Moniz at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank , California , while Serban Ghenea, John Hanes, Tom Coyne and Jacob Dennis mixed and mastered the song at MixStar Studios, Virginia Beach , Virginia and Sterling Sound, New York City took place.

The song was recorded in six versions. Mars referred to the original demo as a “poolside version”, which consisted of a “ Piña-Colada ” vibe and a song text he wrote with “fly through a storm for a unicorn [...] make love on a mountain, bathe in a fountain ”. However, Mars and his team remixed the beat to remove the pool vibe from the track. The resulting version contained the same text, but represented a "far more epic musical trait". According to Mars, it made it to the final selection when it came to deciding which songs would be part of the album, but “something” bothered him: “We painted this picture in our minds - both in silk, I promise the world, but I do don't sing. It should embody a great ballad on the album, but I can't get that certain something! If we really want to slow the flow of the album drastically, I have to sing something crazy. ”Mars and his team rewrote the lyrics and melody. The final version sounded like a "Boyz II Human anthem that climaxed with a great refrain". In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Mars said, "He would want to embody the feeling of the R&B that he fell in love with as a kid."

The title was first released as a promo single on November 4, 2016, one week before the album was released. The track followed as an official, third single release on June 12, 2017.

Before his performance at the Ushuaïa Ibiza Hotel on June 26, 2017, the French DJ and producer David Guetta announced that he would play a collaboration with Bruno Mars at the hotel . It quickly became clear that this would be a remixed version of the song Versace on the Floor . A collaboration between the two took place in 2010. The song The First Time was created . This was leaked by the hacker DJ Stolen and then no longer published.

David Guetta commented on the collaboration:

“I'm incredibly proud that I had the opportunity to work with Bruno Mars on 'Versace on the Floor' […] It's more than a remix: it's a collaboration that brings two worlds together. My goal was to make the song more danceable and DJ-friendly, while respecting the music he brought along, so to keep the song and his voice intact - simply because they are equally great. "

- David Guetta :

While the speed of the original is just 87 bpm , David Guetta increased it to 100 bpm. In addition, the mood of the song was fundamentally changed; the original embodied the stylistic devices of a ballad and the remix a danceable atmosphere, which is characterized by elements of retro-style disco, funk and frensh house music. The style of the song has been compared to that of the French musician duo Daft Punk , both by critics and fans .

Content and music

Versace on the Floor is considered a slow jam . The song is in the key of D major and is based on a tempo of 87 bpm . The song moves at the same tempo the entire time, and Mars' vocals range from A3 to D5 over an octave and a half. During the first verse as well as during the pre-chorus, only Mars' and a keyboard can be heard. The chorus is accompanied by a synthesizer, which accompanies the rest of the song with a kick and a clap. After the second pass, an instrumental part begins, which also includes electric guitar sounds. Background vocals can be heard throughout the last third.

The text is about the lyrical self that wants to convince another person of a romantic evening. While at the beginning you can still hear lines in which the protagonist of the second person mentions various aspects that should underline the romance of the evening, in the chorus he asks her to undress and make love acts with him.

"So, baby, let's just turn down the lights
And close the door
Oooh I love that dress
But you won't need it anymore
No, you won't need it no more
Let's just kiss' til we're naked, baby
[ Versace on the floor] "

- Refrain, original excerpt

"So baby let's turn off the lights
and close the door
Ohhh I love the dress
but you don't need that anymore
No, you don't need it anymore
Let's kiss until we're naked, baby
[Versace on the floor]"

reception

criticism

Entertainment Weekly's Will Robinson compared the song to When I Was Your Man , but noted that Versace on the Floor was "less wistful but more romantic" than the unorthodox jukebox track. MTV News' Sasha Geffen described the track as "wonderfully smooth" and "driven by a keyboard tone that instantly ... flashes back the slow dances from eighth grade."

Several reviews of "GQ" described the song as a slow jam throwback, the sounds of which are reminiscent of the 90s, inspired by Boyz II Men. They doubted the statement that the song was out of the R&B category. Jon Caramanica of the "New York Times" described the song as "a journey back in time to the mid-to-late 80s R&B evolution", as well as a "dreamy New Edition tribute with cool synthesizers that serve as a cradle for him act "and characterizes Mars' singing as a tender beginning, which later in the song" confronts his original style in which he unleashes the stronger side of his voice to transform the sweetness into hunger. "

Josh Eells of "Rolling Stone" suggested the song was inspired by Selena's Dreaming of You and Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror . Vibe writer Desire Thompson described the lyrics as "seductive" and that the song itself evokes an "80s nostalgia". She also compares the sound with the "early sounds" of Jackson. Andrew Unterberger from Billboard magazine stated that the song Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake) by Freddie Jackson "in the core of the entire breathtaking Bruno Mars album" 24K "echoes".

Commercial win

Demand for the song increased particularly after Bruno Mars' live performance at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards . On YouTube, the song reached the 100 million view mark after just a few months. The song fared similarly on Spotify. After the single was released, the song also reached the official single charts in France, Spain and the USA, among others. In the United States, the track was also awarded a gold record for over 500,000 units sold . In Israel, failure on the floor moved up to second place. The remix version by David Guetta increased the success; it received over a million views on YouTube on the very first day.
