David Guetta related about Minaj in this context:

“Even when Nicki Minaj was only a great hip-hop artist and not yet moving towards pop, I was more or less obsessed with her. I think she's really great. I think people are going to be pretty impressed with the way she sings on the song. [...] "

Artwork

On March 21, 2017, Minaj posted the artwork of the single on the social media network Instagram. This shows Nicki Minaj in the center, lightly dressed and in a dark, bluish light, the background shows red, orange and blue neon colors. The performers are in the label-typical font on a black background and the song title is on the right long side.

Musical and content

The song is based on 4/4 time and the tempo is 146 bpm . The song begins with a melody made up of a series of individual notes. In addition, some vocal parts of Minaj start, which starts after four bars with the first verse. After four more bars, a catchy trap kick sets in, which alternates with recurring claps. The second part of the verse is no longer raped aggressively, but sounds more melodic until the vocals begin in the chorus. In addition, the kick disappears here and a bridge that gets faster and faster is heard until the drop begins, based on a rhythmic mixture of trap and dance hall. Lil Waynes can be heard as a result of the second drop, after which the chorus sounds as an outro.

The first verses are a reference to the controversy between Minaj and Remy Ma , which has been ongoing since 2007 and which she has already taken up in previous singles.

In the song, the lyrical ego tries to convince another person that there is a harmony between them that they should act out. It does this through an accumulation of emotions as well as ideas and intentions. Lil Wayne's part is a response to the expressions of the ego. This is how this person explains the potential actions of the lyrical ego and gives further ideas.

“You got something that I believe
I've been waiting for all my
We're blazing high, smoke fill the night
I'm gasoline, you're fire
Oh, you're burnin 'me down, burnin' me down
Oh, you're burnin 'me down, burnin' me ”

- Pre-refrain, original excerpt

"You got something I think
I've been waiting for my whole [life]
We blaze up, smoke fills the night
I'm gasoline, you're fire
Oh, you burn me down, burn me down
Oh, you burn me down, burn me "

- Pre-refrain, translation

reception

criticism

Light My Body Up received mixed reviews. The entire work itself, especially the chorus, was well received, while Nicki Minaj's text passages were criticized negatively. Tim Tabens from the online magazine " Dance-Charts " spoke positively about the song, but described the drop as less convincing:

“'David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne - Light My Body Up 'is a very interesting number. Anyone who was hoping for fast beats and a big drop will be disappointed. However, the title can do a lot in the overall concept and could also spark off again commercially. "

- Tim Tabens : Dance Charts

James Leach from the website “Persui of Pop” describes the individual work of the artists as rather “bad than right”. In particular, he criticized the production technology related to the use of auto-tune and drop as well as lyrics and pitched voice of Lil Wayne's rap part:

“In 'Light My Body Up' Minaj is the focus! The track begins with Minaj's rap part and a possible blow against Remy Ma [...] before she does what she does best: talk about herself and her successes. But Minaj quickly resorts to vocals in the second verse, which is a bit of a shame as the song simply falls back into the pattern of a standard club hit. And although she sounds good - and finally autotune-free - we know she's not the best singer, but she can certainly hold a note! Guetta's production takes a back seat here and only comes into focus during the second half of the chorus with an annoying tinny sound that will obviously take over the club - good or bad. Lil Wayne ... well what can you say? His part can be described as sex, sex and more sex, and that only becomes clear once you understand his mumble rap set to music. "
