2U ( English as "To you") is a song of the French DJs and producers David Guetta in cooperation with the from Canada coming singer Justin Bieber . The release took place on June 9, 2017 on his own record label "What A Music" and the major label " Warner Music ".

2U was written by Jason Boyd , David Guetta , Giorgio Tuinfort, and Justin Bieber . In addition to Guetta and Boyd, Giorgio Tuinfort and trap producer Daniel Tuparia alias Cesqeaux also took part in the production. Other roles played by Daddy's Groove in mastering, mixing and technology, Henry Sarmiento III in technology, Chris “TEK” O'Ryan and Josh Guswin in recording, and The Pianoman and Monsieur Georges in Talkbox . While the vocal recordings took place in the Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles, the final version was produced in the Piano Music Studios in Amsterdam and the Can Rocas Studios in Ibiza.
In an interview with MTV , he said that the contact with Justin Bieber came through a mutual friend Jason Boyd aka Poo Bear. He has already produced almost the entire Justin Bieber album Purpose . Guetta continued:
“We [Poo Bear and I] had worked together for years writing a lot of songs together and then he surprised me by playing Justin one of our demos without letting me know. And then one day he said, 'David, read this email, I have a surprise for you.' 'I said' okayyyy 'and he actually asked Justin if he'd like to record the song. It was the greatest surprise ever. '"
The song was first alluded to by both artists on the social media platform Twitter . On June 5, 2017, Bieber posted a list of names there that was shared by Guetta. The following day he announced the title, collaboration and release date. On the same day, the song was premiered by both artists in a live performance, after which several recordings were made on the Internet. Starting June 7, 2017, 2U went on sale and a promotional video was released showing some of the Victoria's Secret Angels singing the song playback.
David Guetta said about the collaboration:
“Justin has such a unique voice and I have a lot of respect for both his talent and his choices. He took some risks that have made him reinvent himself in such a cool, amazing and creative way lately. I am very proud to finally be able to share a record with him. I would describe '2U' as an incredible combination of emotional energy and a huge melody combined with biting sounds. "

On June 7, 2017, Guetta posted the artwork of the single on Twitter. This shows a woman's mouth slightly open. A filter makes the entire cover appear in a blue / purple tone. The artists are shown in the label-typical font on a white background at the bottom right. The song title is shown in the upper right corner.
Musical and content
The song is based on a 4/4 time signature and the tempo is 145 bpm . There is no prelude, so the song begins with the first verse. In the background, a melody is quickly built from some genre-typical sounds. Vocal cuts and a rhythmic flick are used. At the beginning of the first chorus, the instrumental experiences a break-down, while the first repetition starts with a kick that alludes to the drop, increasing faster and faster. This is based on a typical future bass pattern. After another run, the chorus acts as an outro a third time.
In the song, the lyric self tries to make another person realize how attached it is to them. It does this through an accumulation of things that it would take upon itself to prove its love for her. In the refrain it addresses the relationship that exists between them. Guetta described the song as a romantic one.

Music video
One day before the release, a music video that was made in collaboration with the fashion brand Victoria's Secret was released. Directed by Jerome Duran. Ed Razek produced it. The video shows the four models Elsa Hosk , Jasmine Tookes , Romee Strijd , Stella Maxwell , Martha Hunt and Sara Sampaio . They pose in different places and move their lips to the music. On the day of its release, the music video broke the one million views mark. At the . September 2017 a second, official music video was released. Brewer directed this one. It shows a man stuck in a time warp. His girlfriend keeps leaving him until he overcomes the time warp and they reconcile.

criticism
2U received mostly positive reviews. The entire work was praised by both fans and critics. The focus was particularly on the summer mood and the modernity of the song. In this context, the harmony between tropical house and future bass is mentioned. Timo Büschleb from the online magazine " Dance Charts " spoke positively about the song:
“With '2U' David Guetta and Justin Bieber have screwed a promising summer track that can convince with tropical house influences. Bieber's voice color fits perfectly with the atmosphere conveyed by the song. We can rely on the fact that we will come across the song often this summer, whether on the radio, in the club or at the beach bar. "
Commercial win
2U quickly attracted attention. It received strong support and after a few hours it was number one in several online music services . This was the case in several countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain and the USA. In the music portal iTunes , the song was at the top in 48 countries after just under 12 hours. In Germany, 2U entered third place, with Guetta placing in the top three ranks for the ninth time and Bieber for the sixth time.
