Hey Mama is a song by French DJ and music producer David Guetta in collaboration with rapper Nicki Minaj , singer Bebe Rexha and DJ Afrojack . The song was the fourth single from Guetta's album lists and was released on March 16, 2015.

background

The participating artists wrote Hey Mama together with Ester Dean , Sean Douglas and Giorgio Tuinfort, the latter produced the song together with Guetta and Afrojack. It was the third collaboration between Guetta and Minaj after Where Them Girls At and Turn Me On . Originally, Rexha's name was not mentioned as a feature of the title. This was justified by the fact that too many names in the title would be unfavorable and one therefore tries to name as few features as possible. After talking to Guetta, her name was also listed from June 2015.

The song was first performed at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards , along with Nicki Minaj's single The Night Is Still Young . David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Bebe Rexha played Hey Mama a little later at the iHeart Radio Summer Pool Party.

composition

The intro and chorus of Hey Mama contain a sample of Alan Lomax's song Rosie from 1940. The song, composed in four-four time and in E minor , has a tempo of 86 beats per minute . The vocal range ranges from A3 to E5. The song is structured in verse - refrain form, with a bridge inserted between the third verse and the following refrain . The verses are rapped by Minaj, the chorus is sung by Rexha.

Reviews

Hey mom received mixed reviews. Martin Tenschert from Laut.de gave the song an average rating: “On the other hand, downtempo numbers like" Hey Mama "with Nicki Minaj once again attract non-genre fans [...]. Missy Elliott-esque rapping and folding until grandma screams. Finally, there is a squeeze synth sound and puts the gravestone on the moderately good sause ”. Bianca Gracie from Idolator describes the song as a "crazy electro house / trap sound" and praises Minaj's rap performances. Rexha's vocal performances are praised by Richard Baxter. “The real star of Hey Mama is Bebe Rexha and her memorable chorus. A song can't sell without a solid hookline or a solid chorus, here we have both ”. Hey Mama received negative criticism for its "sexist" text.
