background

Minaj said of the song: “'Starships' is one of my absolute, absolute favorite records on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded . It just sounds like a Ryan Seacrest -type of record. And I'm so excited for you to give this song your blessing, Ryan, because I know people are gonna love it. It feels right. It just feels good. It makes people feel happy and that's all I want. I want to start the year off with making people feel good. The [Grammy] performance was the performance, that was my clear craziness, and now it's time to make people dance and have fun, and that's all I want to do. ”In another interview, Minaj gave further details about the recording of the song : "There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with, he just sent me that one day, and he said, 'Hey, I got something for you!' I was like, 'You got to be kidding me, right?' I went to the studio and started writing… scratch that… I didn't even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like: 'Let's go to the beach… let's go get away.' It was just so good. It feels good! "

composition

Starships is a Eurodance , Europop , Electropop and Euro House song. The song also contains strong hip-hop influences with rap verses by Minaj. Some compared Starships to songs from Eurodance groups like 2 Unlimited and C + C Music Factory . In the final moments of the song, the lines are sung by a stadium audience. Popcrush's Scott Shettler compared the backing vocals in the chorus to that in Britney Spears ' 2011 hit Till the World Ends . MTV's Jocelyn Vena said, “It's hard not to see Spears' influence on the rapper / singer when listening to the song . ”(“ It's hard not to tell Britney Spears' influence on the rapper / singer by listening to the song. ”) Billboard magazine compared Starships to the works of Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez , other artists, which also produced by RedOne.

Music video

background

In early March 2012, a fan asked Minaj on Twitter if there would be a music video for Starships . Minaj replied quickly, “Yes. Of course barbz. Don't be silly ". ("Yes. Barbz of course. Don't get silly.") The Starships music video was filmed on Oahu Island, Hawaii , within three days from March 13th to March 15th, 2012 . Directed by Anthony Mandler . In an interview with Capital FM , Minaj praised the music video and described it as "very, very saucy" and her best music video to date. The music video premiered on April 26, 2012 at 7:56 am on MTV .

content

The music video begins with a spaceship that flies along an island. The flight wakes the island's residents. The spaceship then beams a pink bikini girl with green hair (Nicki Minaj) to the island. The girl then starts singing the song. She is believed to be worshiped as a goddess by the island's natives. In the next scene, Minaj is dancing in the mountains and wearing a white, pink and black bodysuit , behind her is a glass box that she uses to dance. In the next scene it's night and Minaj is sitting on the glass box near a volcano, the locals dancing around the box. In the last scene, the now blonde celebrates with the islanders in a stripper outfit. In between the scenes, clips showing Minaj with kaleidoscope effects are faded in. In the last moment of the music video, Minaj sings the final scenes and looks straight into the camera.

reception

MTV's John Mitchell criticized the release of the music video. He himself found it strange that the music video for the third single from the album Beez in the Trap was released earlier than the music video for the first single Starships .

Commercial win

Starships debuted at number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 2012. It is her second top ten hit as a solo artist in the United States, after Super Bass reached number 3 in 2011.
