Did It on 'Em is a song by the rapper Nicki Minaj from Trinidad and Tobago . It was released as the fourth single from Minaj's debut album Pink Friday . The song was produced by Bangladesh and written by Nicki Minaj, Shondrae Crawford, J. Ellington and Samuels.

Background and composition

Commenting on the song's content, Minaj said, “This track follows Roman's Revenge on the album and is a ballad about the arrogant habits of a diva like me. Sometimes you just wanna shit on'em lol. This arrogance only comes to the fore when you bring the ghetto girl together with the Queen of England. "

Did It On'em is characterized by a strong beat like the one Minaj uses for some songs on Pink Friday . Producer Bangladesh created hi-hats , which were described as superfluous. You can also hear some synth sounds that simulate the sound of an "alarm siren". In the song Minaj raps over the beat and describes all female rappers as their "daughters".

criticism

Among music critics was did it on'em well received, most critics saw it as a connection to the "older Minaj" from their mixtape days. Scott Plagenhoef from Pitchfork Media praised the title and rated it as the best recording on the album. Tom Breihan explained that Minaj's voice was always meant to rap and that she can achieve an authentic mix of rap and singing in Did It On 'Em with her little vocal interludes ; she is one of the few artists who have mastered something like this. Breihan complimented Minaj further and praised her way of making music and the high recognition value of her voice. Margaret Wappler of the Los Angeles Times described the song as "seductively aggressive" and compared it to the hit A Milli by Minaj's colleague Lil Wayne , with Minaj's song being better musically. Did It On'em was ranked 25th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "50 Best Songs of 2010" . Marc Hogan from Spin Magazine praised Minaj's "excellent" rap.

Music video

In April 2011, Minaj announced in an interview with KISS-FM's DJ JoJo that she would be shooting a music video for the song, but did not give an exact time.
