Fly is a song by rapper Nicki Minaj in collaboration with singer Rihanna . The song was produced by JR Rotem and Kevin Hissink and written by Kevin Hissink, W. Jordan, Onika Maraj, Jonathan Rotem and Clemm Rishad. It appeared on Nicki Minaj's debut album Pink Friday (2010).

background

The song was produced by JR Rotem, who previously worked with Britney Spears , Rick Ross and Leona Lewis . In an interview with MTV News , Rotem stated that he only got involved as a producer because he had heard some songs from Minaj's Pink Friday and noticed how "inspiring" her work is. He explained, “We were almost at the end of their project, I came into the studio and I had some songs [for them]. I was very excited about that. When I played the songs, she knew exactly: 'Yes, we need these songs for my album', then she was just as excited as I was. "Minaj heard the demo recording of the song and wanted to sing and rap with Rihanna later . Rotem was also convinced of this and told Minaj: "'That would be great, but getting Rihanna for your recording is easier said than done." I think that speaks for Nicki's star power. I said, 'Yeah, she's definitely the first choice.' ”“ It took a while as Rihanna had to promote her own album and traveled a lot. ”

After recording the Pink Friday Diaries , Minaj wrote about the song on her blog :

“FLY is one of my absolute faves. I wanted to work with Rihanna for a long time. I'm very proud of her accomplishments; especially since she was born on an island like me :). This song is a female empowerment song. But then again, its not specific to just women. It speaks about flying, soaring high in the face of every single solitary adversity that comes your way. I speak about how the media has attempted to box me in and how that has made me feel suffocated. After years of being dragged through the mud, I've mustered up the courage to re-define myself. I believe that I represent an entire generation. My fans have become my family; and together we have become a movement. Get ready for it. We came to win. (...) ”

“FLY is one of my favorite songs. I've wanted to work with Rihanna for a long time. I am very proud of what she has achieved; especially since she was born on an island like me :). This song is an emancipation hymn. Still, it's not necessarily all about women. It's about flying, about being able to overcome all the obstacles that are put in your way. I talk about how the media tried to narrow me down and how it choked me down. After years of being dragged through the mud, I've now found the courage to redefine myself. I believe that I represent a whole generation. My fans became my family and together we became a new movement. Be prepared for it. We came to win. "

criticism

The song was praised by most music critics, many described the song as "relaxed". Robbie Daw from the Idolator praised the song: “The Fly produced by J. R. Rotem is hopeful, much like I Believe I Can Fly for the new generation. In addition, Rihanna has improved again, whether in Eminem's Love The Way You Lie and in TIs Live Your Life , so Nicki Minaj has the opportunity to fly to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with Fly when the song is officially released as a single. "

Scott Plagenhoef from Pitchfork Media praised the song: “This song Fly is an example of what a good album Pink Friday is, especially thanks to the collaboration with Rihanna.” Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stone commented on the genre selection: “Minaj takes on the Rihanna style, sings in R&B with an electro influence and once again shows her cheeky side. "Marc Hogan from Spin magazine praised the song:" Fly is charismatic, colorful, personal and friendly. "

Music video

The music video for the song was shot on January 7, 2011, and directed by Sanaa Hamri. Fly is the third music video Minaj shot for promotional purposes only, along with Save Me and Girls Fall Like Dominoes . Nicki Minaj and Rihanna both tweeted pictures of the set and the backdrops of the music video on the Internet, where you can recognize Rihanna with her red hair and Minaj with a black Afro hairstyle, and Minaj is also wearing a pink catsuit in one of the photos . In an interview with E! Talking online about the concept of the music video, Minaj stated, “We plan to save the world in several ways, not just one way like in the music video. That's all I can say about the music video. ”On a blog on Minaj's website, she stated that the music video for Fly will not be released for the time being.

In an interview with MTV News , Minaj discussed the music video and a possible official single release from Fly . She explained that the song and music video would not be released until later as she wanted to release other songs first and not interfere with Rihanna's own releases. She would like to give both artists time to promote their own albums until the time comes when there is the perfect opportunity for both of them to release the collaboration. Minaj added, “So Rihanna has a lot of songs to put out and I want her songs to have a moment and celebrate success and dominate everything. When Rihanna is ready, she'll let me know and we'll release Fly as the official single. "

By October 2015, the music video had been viewed over 100.9 million times on Vevo .
