Pon de Replay is the debut single of Barbadian R & B singer Rihanna , from her debut album Music of the Sun in 2005. The song reached # 2 on the charts in the US Billboard Hot 100 first, so it was Rihanna's top 5 single in the United States . Internationally, the song was also successful, reaching No. 1 in New Zealand , No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 6 in Australia , Canada and Germany . The beat of Pon de Replay comes from Natasja Saad's hit Mon De Reggae .

One of her friends introduced Rihanna to producer Evan Rogers at the age of 15 while on vacation in Barbados. Rogers and his partner Carl Sturken then gave Rihanna the opportunity to record demos in the United States. These were sent to various record labels , including Jay-Z , the then CEO of Def Jam Recordings, who then signed Rihanna and produced Pon de Replay with her .

Musical and content

Pon de Replay is a reggae - dance-pop song. It was composed in F minor and has influences from R&B beats. Pon de Replay is about going to a disco and dancing. The DJ is addressed directly (Hey Mr. DJ) , he should repeat a song over and over again. Rihanna said of the chorus of the song, "It's just the language we speak in Barbados ."

Commercial win

In the United States , Pon de Replay debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 79. The song reached the top ten on July 16, 2005. It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 30, 2005. The song spent 3 weeks in rank 2, and 12 weeks in the top ten. Mariah Carey's We Belong Together kept Rihanna's Pon de Replay away from number 1, which spent a total of 14 weeks in number 1, Pussycat Dolls Don't Cha also only reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Pon de Replay was named by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) honored platinum for over 1,000,000 units sold .

Music video

Little X directed the music video for Pon de Replay . The video is set in a disco . You can see Rihanna and her friends visiting a disco together - but because of the boring music, nobody is dancing. Then Rihanna comes on stage, she wears a T-shirt and a broad Hip Hop - jeans and begins to sing and dance. The DJ mixes the song and the other nightclub-goers start dancing too. In some scenes, Rihanna lolls against a wall in a blue dress . Rihanna later dances with Cardinal Offishall and does a belly dance .

Cover versions

The girl group Girl Authority covered the song in 2006 for their debut album of the same name. Weird Al Yankovic covered the song for his album Straight Outta Lynwood .
