Redemption Song ( Engl. For "Redemption Song") is the last piece on Bob Marley's ninth music album, Uprising . By the time he wrote the piece around 1979, Marley had already been diagnosed with cancer, from which he died in 1981. According to his wife Rita Marley, Marley was already suffering from severe pain in 1979, but without disclosing it, and was preoccupied with his own mortality. This is evident throughout the album, especially this track.

The piece of music

Marley became world famous as a pioneer of reggae music from Jamaica . The piece Redemption Song , however, belongs to folk music . In contrast to most of his other pieces of music, Redemption Song was recorded as a solo, with Marley singing alone and accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar. On the reissue of Uprising from 2001 and on the compilation One Love: The Very Best of Bob Marley & the Wailers , the Redemption Song was released as a bonus track in a band version. However, the solo version is best known to most listeners.

As with most of his pieces, the Redemption Song also expresses Marley's religious belief as a Rastafarian . Marley also urges you to free yourself from self-imposed constraints.

In 2004 the Redemption Song was voted 66th of the 500 most important songs by Rolling Stone magazine.
