Cast is an English band formed in 1993 in Liverpool by John Power , former bassist from The La’s , and Peter Wilkinson , former bassist from Shack .

The band released four albums between 1995 and 2001. Liam Gallagher described them as one of the few bands he liked, and Cast was one of the few Britpop bands to survive the end of the movement and release an album after 2000. It has been speculated that the name Cast comes from the last word on The La's only album. John Power said in an interview that it was coincidence.

biography

The band's founder and songwriter was John Power , formerly the bassist for the Liverpool band The La’s (about: the buddies ), which he left in 1991. Power then played, now as a rhythm guitarist and singer, initially with changing line-ups, of which only Peter Wilkinson (bass) remained as a permanent member. Not until November 1993 was drummer Keith O'Neill and guitarist Liam 'Skin' Tyson the final line-up, with whom the band first appeared in January 1994 in Hull.

Even before the band had a record deal, Cast played as support for Elvis Costello and Oasis . While on the Oasis tour, Polydor Cast a recording deal, and the band signed. The first single Finetime , released in 1995 at the height of the Britpop boom, was a success. The follow-up single Alright even reached the top 15 in the UK charts. The accompanying album All Change , produced by John Leckie , was released in June 1995 and reached number 7 on the British album charts. The record went platinum and was the fastest-selling album in Polydor's history to date.

The somewhat quieter second album Mother Nature Calls was again produced by John Leckie and was released in April 1997. The album reached number 3 in the charts, three of the four singles reached the top ten.

When the third album, Magic Hour , was released in May 1999, the Britpop movement was already in decline. The album produced by Gil Norton reached number 6 on the charts, but sales soon collapsed. The first single Beat Mama became the band's last top ten hit in the UK. John Power himself believed that with the third album for Cast a chapter was over.

For the fourth album, John Powell worked with producer and programmer Tristin Norwell in search of a new sound. Beetroot was released in July 2001, but could not build on the success of its predecessor.

In August 2002, the band members from Cast took a break to work on solo projects, as it was officially known. The band had broken up.

In June 2010, Power went on a "Cast Acoustic Show" tour where he played some cast pieces along with new tracks he had written the year before for a potential new cast album. On June 22nd it was officially announced that the band is repositioning itself and has plans to work with new material. In November and December, the band toured the UK to mark the 15th anniversary of All Change .

Cast released their fifth studio album Troubled Times , produced by John Leckie , initially on November 2, 2011 as a download on Pledgemusic ; it is now also published on CD. The album features drummer Steve Pilgrim, who did a short tour with the band in December. The future of the original drummer O'Neill with the band is uncertain as he is unable to regularly participate in recordings and touring due to obligations as a tour manager.
