Alpharita Constantia Marley Anderson , better known as Rita Marley (born July 25, 1946 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba ), is a Jamaican reggae musician of Cuban origin. She is the widow of Bob Marley and the mother of Sharon , Cedella , Ziggy , Stephen and Stephanie Marley .

Rita Marley grew up in Trenchtown , Kingston . She belonged to the band The Soulettes until 1974 together with Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths for Bob Marley & the Wailers formed the backing vocal trio I-Threes , with whom she still performs today. After the death of her husband, she managed his inheritance, which resulted in disputes with his previous producers several times, and produced other albums of her own.

Rita Marley now lives in Ghana . When she received honorary citizenship of Addis Ababa in 2005 , she was quoted as saying that the remains of Bob Marley were to be exhumed and reburied in Ethiopia , the home of Haile Selassie . This sparked excitement and outrage in Jamaica. However, the exhumation apparently intended by Rita Marley has been misrepresented. There were never any plans for an exhumation.

On July 2, 2005, Rita Marley performed at the Live 8 Worldwide Benefit Concerts in Philadelphia alongside her son Stephen and the Black Eyed Peas .
