Trenchtown is a district of Kingston , Jamaica . It is mostly inhabited by the poor and can be described as a slum area.

The district is particularly known for the numerous reggae musicians who grew up there. They include Bob Marley , Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer , who wrote their first songs there and founded the band The Wailing Wailers . The group named the songs Trenchtown Rock and Trenchtown after this district. In the song No Woman, No Cry , Marley also sings about his time in the "government yard in Trenchtown" in retrospect, addressing his mother in particular, who suffered from the difficult conditions in the neighborhoods in Trenchtown.
