Life
Childhood and youth
Judy Mowatt grew up in the capital Kingston on the island of Jamaica . As a girl she sang in the church choir and when she was 14 she joined the Dance Squad in 1966, which toured the Caribbean . After a few years, Mowatt and two of her friends, Beryl Lawson and Merle Clemonson , were in a dance troupe. They wanted to try to sing professionally and so soon afterwards they formed the trio The Gaylettes .
An early form of reggae called early reggae had begun, but the trio was more influenced by American soul and rhythm and blues . The band got a recording deal from Motown and became successful.
