Rehab is a song written by Justin Timberlake , Timothy Z. Mosley and Hannon Lane for R&B singer Rihanna , who recorded it with American pop musician Justin Timberlake. The song was first released on December 8, 2008 as the eighth single from Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad . The single was produced by Timbaland and co-producer Hannon Lane.

Rehab is one of three songs on the Good Girl Gone Bad album produced by Timbaland. When Timbaland performed together with Justin Timberlake in Chicago, he came into the studio, where Rihanna was also present. Timberlake played around with technology a bit and made a beat that everyone liked. Later on on the tour, Timberlake met up with Rihanna and Timbaland again. Timberlake remembered the little gimmick and wanted to write a song for Rihanna from this beat. Timbaland eventually suggested the title rehab . Timberlake wrote the song from memory, improvised a version of the song, and sang it. As co-writer next to Timbaland and Timberlake, Hannon Lane is named, who also co-produced the song. The final recording took place in January 2007 at Roc the Mic Studio in New York City . Demacio Castellon directed the recording and later also arranged the mix at Hit Factory Studios in Miami. The other two songs on Good Girl Gone Bad are Sell Me candy and Lemme Get That .
Rehab was the eighth and final single from Rihanna's hit album Good Girl Gone Bad . The single was first released as a radio song on October 6, 2008 and was eventually released as a single on December 8, 2008 in the United States and the United Kingdom, and as a download single on December 12, 2008 via iTunes and 7digital . In Germany, the single was only released in January 2009. In addition to an instrumental version, a live recording of the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour from Manchester was released on December 6, 2007 via iTunes , which was later also included on the Good Girl Gone Bad Live DVD .

Music style and text
Rehab is a mid-tempo ballad in Rihanna's typical contemporary R&B style that she played before Good Girl Gone Bad . The beat is a typical Timbaland production. The song starts with strings, then the groove develops from the sounds of acoustic guitars , tambourine and a light backbeat . The vocals are mainly done by Rihanna, Justin Timberlake is only used in the bridge as a background singer . The song is about getting over an ex-partner when you're still lovesick. The ex-partner is compared to a kind of illness or addiction, the consequences of which can be cured with rehabilitation . Timberlake intended the ballad as a presentation of a grown-up Rihanna who became a star at the age of 15 and who should now be taken seriously as an artist.
Many critics drew parallels with similar songs by Justin Timberlake, such as What Goes Around (Comes Around) or Cry Me a River , and said the song would also fit well on a Timberlake album or be used as a B-side . But they also think the song suits Rihanna. The song was mostly discussed positively. So Rodney Dugue wrote at The Village Voice it would be one of the best songs on the album. Sarah Rodman even described it as "essential" in her review of the album for the Boston Globe . In Vibe magazine , Rehab was highlighted as a positive example as the only ballad on the album. The Guardian called the song a "mournful tale of lost love feeling like a catastrophic rehab meltdown" (for example: "a sad story of lost love, like a breakdown in rehab").
While most of the reviews were good, there were also critical voices. Kai Kopp, who for Laut.de a slating wrote the album, praised the song in his review actually a single with the words: " Rehab is one with smoother Atmo to the acceptable pieces, more good will is not there." Tom Breihan described the Instrumentation as successful and in his review for Pitchfork Media called the piece a thin but solid entry in "Timbalakes" (new word from Timbaland and Timberlake) back catalog. The song would go better with Timberlake's falsetto singing style. Rihanna, on the other hand, would sound like a robot trying to imitate Alanis Morissette on the track . Her thin voice just doesn't match the song. Sal Cinquemani joked in Slant that the song was so bad it could almost be Justin Timberlake's. Only when he said this did he realize that it was actually written by him. The song is proof that Timberlake is better off writing about cocks and asses (a reference to his two songs SexyBack and Dick in a Box ).
Music video
The video was recorded on October 22, 2008 at Vasquez Rocks Park, near Los Angeles. Directed by Anthony Mandler, who has already shot more than 12 videos for the artist. Their first joint collaboration was Unfaithful (2006). Other videos were Take a Bow , Disturbia and Russian Roulette . The video shows Rihanna and Justin Timberlake in the desert with a convertible. The two were filmed in a defensive stance as well as in an intimate embrace on the hood of the car. On the day of the shooting, pictures from the video and the shoot were leaked and found their place in the tabloid press . This fueled the rumors that the two would secretly meet, although they were both in steadfast relationships, Justin Timberlake was in a relationship with Jessica Biel at the time , while Rihanna formed a couple with Chris Brown . In fact, when asked, Jessica Biel was jealous when she saw the pictures and the shooting team reported on the "good chemistry" between the two. When asked, Timberlake stated that although he had a great time watching the video, nothing else happened. He just wrote the song and was therefore allowed to take part in the video. In fact, it wasn't until 2009, about a year after the video was shot, that the two of them had an affair, with Rihanna having already separated from Chris Brown, Timberlake not yet from Biel.
On November 13, 2008, Rihanna released a teaser for the music video for Rehab. The video first aired on MTV four days later . At the Urban Music Awards 2009 Rihanna won the award for best music video with Rehab.
Live performances
The song premiered live on April 28, 2008 at the Pepsi Center in Denver , Colorado . There Rihanna sang this and other songs from the Good Girl Gone Bad album. On the same evening Kanye West , NERD and Lupe Fiasco also played .
Rehab was the fourth song on the setlist of the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour , which took place between 2007 and 2009. Her live performance in Manchester was recorded, so the live version of the song can be found in the iTunes shop and on the Good Girl Gone Bad Live DVD . Rehab was played as the twelfth song on the Last Girl on Earth Tour , which took place a year later, but fell off the setlist in Australia. The set for this tour included a psychiatric couch and metal human limbs.
On November 23, 2008, Rihanna performed the song at the 2008 American Music Awards . On the same evening she won two awards. On February 7, 2009, she played the song at the party before the 2009 Grammy Awards . At the actual award show, where she also wanted to perform the song, she had to cancel because of a violent argument with her boyfriend at the time, Chris Brown. An argument broke out on the way home from the party and the pop singer was later sentenced to five years probation and 180 hours of social service. There was also a ban on contact .

Rehab reached the top ten in some nations. Nowhere was it a number one hit. The song entered the charts the highest in Germany at number four in the Media-Control Charts. In the Hot 100 Billboard Charts in the United States, the song only reached number 18. Compared to the other singles on the album, the success was in the upper midfield, but did not reach the number one hits Umbrella , Don't Stop the Music , Take a Bow and Disturbia . In the United States, the single was awarded double platinum , equivalent to 2,500,000 units sold.
