He rose to prominence in 2005 with his debut single Run It! , which reached number one in the US. In addition to his work as a musician, he has also appeared in a number of films and television programs. Brown has sold 100 million records to date.

Life

childhood and adolescence

Chris Brown was born on May 5, 1989 in the small town of Tappahannock , Virginia , to Joyce Hawkins, a former daycare manager, and Clinton Brown, a correctional officer at a local prison. He also has an older sister named Lytrell Bundy who works in a bank. His parents divorced when Brown was six years old. The musician later said in an interview that he grew up with violence. His mother's new boyfriend was violent towards him, which "appalled" him as a child.

Brown has said in various interviews that he grew up listening to the music of Michael Jackson , Anita Baker , Stevie Wonder and Sam Cooke , and he also credits singer Usher as an inspiration.

He attended Essex High School in his hometown until the spring of 2005, after which he received private tuition.

From late 2007 to February 2009, Brown was in a relationship with Caribbean pop star Rihanna . In March 2011, it was announced that Brown was in a relationship with model Karrueche Tran . In early October 2012, he announced the split from Tran, citing his friendship with ex-girlfriend Rihanna as the reason for this. Following Tran's split, it was revealed that Chris Brown had a daughter (b. May 2014) with former model Nia Amey-Guzman.

Violence in the relationship with Rihanna

From late 2007 to February 2009, Chris Brown was in a relationship with singer Rihanna . The relationship ended in a violent altercation after attending a pre-Grammy party together in February 2009. A little later it became known that Chris Brown had been arrested that evening on suspicion of having made a criminal threat against his girlfriend. On March 5, Brown was charged with assault and threats. Pictures of Rihanna with lacerations and bruises on her face, taken immediately after the incident, went around the world.

At the end of May of the year it was announced that Rihanna had been summoned by the court to testify on June 22nd about the course of events. During the day of the trial, after a deal with the judge, Brown pled guilty to the assault charge and avoided prison. He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on probation, as well as participating in an anti-aggression program and completing 190 hours of community service. For the time being, he was not allowed to contact his ex-girlfriend and was not allowed to approach her up to a maximum of 45 meters (nine meters at public events). Rihanna was then informed of the verdict in the courtroom. She later shared through her attorney that she believed the punishment was just and fair.

After the incident, Rihanna withdrew from public life for some time, giving very few interviews. Only when her fourth studio album , Rated R , was released did she comment on the incident at the time. During a Tell All interview that aired on American television on November 5, she confirmed a rumor that a fight broke out between them when she read a text message to him from his ex-girlfriend. Brown previously lied to her about this and she caught him. As a result, he freaked out and became violent.

In late 2009, Brown gave an interview to The Times newspaper in which, according to Der Spiegel , he suggested he was not the only aggressor. In the interview he pointed out that many people believe that domestic violence is a one-sided affair and that as a man you will be laughed at if a woman hits a man. He also said that if both partners use violence, then both have made a mistake.

rape lawsuit

In January 2022, a woman filed a civil suit against Brown alleging the singer drugged and raped her on Sean Combs ' yacht in December 2020. The woman is a dancer, choreographer and musician. He said he served her a drink on the yacht after which she felt "disoriented" and "physically unstable" and then raped her. The woman is demanding $20 million in damages.

music career

2002-2004: Beginning of career

Brown was discovered at his father's gas station in 2002, aged 13, by local music producers called Hitmission Records who were looking for talent. Lamont Fleming, who was affiliated with Hitmission Records , organized singing lessons for Brown, and the team helped create demos and maintained contacts in New York City to secure a record deal. Through Tina Davis, then senior A&R of Def Jam Recordings , Brown finally managed to meet then-record label president LA Reid . The latter offered him a contract on the same day. The contract negotiations lasted two months until Tina Davis finally lost her job due to a merger. Brown then hired her as a manager and Davis began introducing the singer to various labels such as Jive Records , J Records and Warner Bros. Records through videotaping in order to secure a deal. Ultimately, Brown settled on Jive Records , where he signed a record deal in December 2004. Brown, who was 15 at the time, later said in an interview that he chose the label because it had already had great success with younger musicians like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake , as well as being very powerful in the field of pop music as well as longevity of careers.

2005-2006: Breakthrough with his debut album

Chris Brown, 2005

After Brown signed to Jive Records in 2004, he began recording his debut album in February 2005. Around 50 songs were recorded in this way by May, 14 of which were included on the track list for his first studio album. As an addition, an acknowledgment was found under the name "Thank You", in which his manager Tina Davis was also involved. The singer also acted as a songwriter for some of the tracks on his album. The production of the CD took less than eight weeks in total. On June 30, 2005, Brown's first release was the song Run It! , which featured rapper Juelz Santana , went straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 . It stayed there for a total of five weeks, making Brown the first male artist since Montell Jordan (1995) to have his debut single number one on the US charts. The song also peaked at number five in Germany and number two in the UK, making it his most successful single to date in both countries. On November 29, 2005 his debut studio album, which was released under his name Chris Brown , followed and reached number two on the Billboard 200 . In large parts of Europe, the album did not enter the top ten of the charts, in Germany it was only number 31. At the Grammy Awards 2007 , the album was nominated in the category "Best Contemporary R&B Album", but the prize went to the CD B'Day by singer Beyoncé Knowles .

On December 13, 2005, Brown's second single Yo (Excuse Me Miss) followed , which fell short of the success of his first song, especially internationally, but still reached number seven in the USA. The music video filmed to support the track received a nomination at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards . In April, August and November 2006, three more songs from the album were released: Gimme That , Say Goodbye and Poppin' , which, with the exception of "Say Goodbye", missed entering the top ten of the US singles charts . By August 2006, Brown had embarked on his first major tour, the Up Close and Personal Tour .

As a result of his commercially successful debut in the music industry, Brown has been honored with a number of accolades and nominations from prestigious music awards. He was nominated for Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist at the American Music Awards and received similar nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards . At the Grammy Awards in 2007 , he escaped an award in the category "Best New Artist", which at the time went to country singer Carrie Underwood . 2009-2010: "Graffiti" and mixtapes

The year 2009 began for Brown with the physical altercation surrounding his ex-girlfriend Rihanna , who is also a musician. He then withdrew from the music industry for a few weeks to await the legal and media consequences.

As early as 2008, Brown started working on his third studio album, where he wanted to try out a new musical style. In September he announced that the recordings for the album were finished and the CD should be released soon. September 29, 2009 saw the release of the album's first single, I Can Transform Ya . The song featured Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz , with the latter also producing the track. The song reached position 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 , in Germany it did not enter the charts. As of November 24, 2009, the second single, Crawl , was available. It only peaked at number 53 in the US and was the final release from the album. This eventually appeared under the name Graffiti International on December 7th, and was available in the United States a day later. It went on to peak at number seven on the Billboard 200 , but it was Brown's first album not to chart in Germany. Commercially, the CD fell far short of its two predecessors, selling under 1,000,000 units to date, while Chris Brown and Exclusive both have sold over 3,000,000 CDs. From October to December 2009, he embarked on the Fan Appreciation Tour to promote the album.

At the 2010 BET Awards , Brown attracted attention when he started crying onstage during his tribute performance honoring the late musician Michael Jackson , notoriously a role model for the singer.

In 2010, Brown released a total of three mixtapes , in which he also demonstrated his abilities as a rapper for the first time . All mixtapes were offered for free download on the Internet and have been available free of charge ever since. On February 14, 2010, his first official release in this format was In My Zone (Rhythm & Streets) . From May 17th a joint work with the musician Tyga was available ( Fan of a Fan ), from which the singles Deuces and No Bullshit were released. Both songs charted in the US and were later reused for Brown's fourth studio album. On November 26, 2010, his third mixtape of 2010, titled In My Zone 2 , was released.

The album and songs Deuces and Take My Time were nominated for a total of three awards at the 2011 Grammy Awards , in the categories Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and Best Contemporary R&B Album" Brown did not receive an award, even with eight nominations at this award.

2011: "FAME", tour and mixtape

Already in September 2010 it was announced that Brown had started work on a follow-up to the album Graffiti . A few days later the name of the album became known: FAME This is both an acronym for "Fans Are My Everything" and for "Forgiving All My Enemies". The first single from the CD was also released in 2010: the song Yeah 3x was released in October and reached number 15 in the USA. It came in seventh in Germany, behind Brown's debut single Run It! the artist's most successful song to date in the German single charts. February 2011 saw the release of the album's most successful song in the US: Look at Me Now . The single peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and featured guest appearances from rappers Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes . The song Beautiful People was then available from March, before the fourth studio album was released a few days later, also in March. It reached position 39 in Germany and tenth in the United Kingdom. The CD debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 , making it Brown's first album to do so. Also in March was the album's fourth single, She Ain't You . The song samples musician Michael Jackson 's song Human Nature and peaked at number 27 in the US. The title Next 2 You , in which the Canadian singer Justin Bieber was involved, was released on June 24, 2011 and was the third release from the album, alongside "Yeah 3x" and "Beautiful People", which was able to reach a chart position in Germany (rank 28 ). Brown's fourth mixtape, Boy in Detention , was released in August. In September, Brown also continued his FAME Tour , which had started in April with four shows in Australia and has since been on hiatus. The tour ended in Dubai in December , concerts in Germany were not on the program. In addition, since September 13, 2011, the sixth and final single from the album was available: Wet the Bed . The song peaked at number 77 in the US.

In October 2011, it was announced that Brown's record label , Jive Records , which was part of RCA Music Group , would be dissolved and all artists from that record company, like those from Arista Records and J Records , would automatically be signed to RCA Records . These changes took place for structural reasons.

On November 18, 2011, the song Strip was released as a single from Brown's mixtape Boy in Detention , after which it peaked at #37 in the US.

In 2011, Brown was also involved in numerous songs as a guest musician. The best known are probably the singles Champion , which can be found on the second album by British rapper Chipmunk and reached number two in the UK, and the track International Love by rapper Pitbull .

The release was ultimately the most successful of the album with top 10 placements in Great Britain and the USA as well as the upper half of the charts in Germany, Belgium and France. As a follow-up single, the track New Flame was released on June 30, 2014 in collaboration with Usher and Rick Ross . A remix by house DJ Dave Audé , whose remix was also responsible for numerous chart positions for the song Don't Judge Me , gave this track a commercial boost.
