"Yeah 3x" was written by Chris Brown, Justin Franks, Kevin McCall, Amber Streeter and Calvin Harris, Franks also worked as a producer under his stage name DJ Frank E. The song was recorded at The Record Plant , a recording studio in Los Angeles , California , with mixing under the direction of Serban Ghenea at Mixstar Studios in Virginia Beach , Virginia .

On September 2, 2010, Brown posted an entry on his Twitter account, according to which a song called "Calypso", which was produced by Polow da Don , should appear as the next single after " Deuces ". "Deuces" was released in June of the same year as the first single from the joint mixtape by Tyga and Brown, Fan of a Fan . For unknown reasons the plans were changed and “Yeah 3x” was chosen as the first single of the forthcoming fourth studio album. In an interview, Brown commented on the reasons for publishing the song. So he wanted to choose a title that particularly appeals to the part of his followers who are fans of his pop music . Lately he's been releasing mostly hip-hop music with the help of his mixtapes . The song would also have reminded him of his 2008 worldwide successful single " Forever ". While chatting with fans on the Ustream website , Brown revealed that the single was written in 15 minutes and that it was "effortless and fun." "It was kind of like Forever and I hope you enjoy it."

composition

“Yeah 3x” was mostly described as a fast dance-pop , europop and electro-house song. There is also a strong bass line to be heard throughout the song. According to Sony / ATV Music Publishing , the track plays in four-four time at 120 beats per minute . It was written in the key of D major . The song samples part of the single " I'm Not Alone " by Calvin Harris . In Idolator you described the song as a mix of Brown's single " Forever " in 2008 and " Bulletproof " by the British electro-pop duo La Roux . In a review for The Guardian newspaper , however, it was said that the music was more inspired by the sound of David Guetta . Another reviewer compared the song to the music of Usher , Taio Cruz , Jay Seans , Calvin Harris and the band The Black Eyed Peas .

Music video

Background and abstract

The video was shot by Colin Tilley at Universal Studios . Kevin McCall , Teyana Taylor and Future Funk , a dance duo made up of two children who became famous for appearing on America's Got Talent , were also featured in the video. The clip premiered on October 21, 2010 on MTV .

In the first scene of the video, Brown walks along a deserted street, apparently at night. The camera then switches to a scene in which Brown jumps onto a truck in the middle of the day and makes acrobatic movements there. Then the singer is discovered by the people around him and a kind of dance party begins, in which the entire city apparently takes part. Occasionally, Brown's dance scenes are shown on the dark street that he walked on in the first sequence. In the next few scenes, Brown dances through the street with the crowd before singing while standing on a balcony of a house. Then the video switches to a dark market square where someone opens a hydrant and the place is sprayed wet. Now the people are all dancing in the wet place where Brown is. After the balcony scene was faded in again in the meantime, at the end of the clip the shot changes again to one of the streets on which Brown had already danced at the beginning of the video. Until the end, the perspective changes between the balcony scene, the scene on the wet market square and the one on the dry street.

reception

A reviewer from radio station WXRK rated the video seven out of ten stars and wrote that there were a lot of choreographed dance elements in the video. Brown also proves with the clip that he “still has it” and that he makes everyone in the neighborhood dance. The video is particularly suitable for dance fans. Brad Wete praised the video as "seriously amusing" and stated that there was no exaggerated sexist thing to be seen. Robbie Daw compared the clip with the one for the singles " The Way You Make Me Feel " by Michael Jackson and " Alright " by Janet Jackson and concluded by saying that the video was derived. However, Brown is also making serious efforts to polish up its commercial appeal. Billboard magazine described the music video as "kid-friendly".

Public reactions

Receptions

Amar Toor from AOL Radio called the song "dance-friendly" and continued to describe it as the "perfect club anthem with which you could give a noisy start to every night". Ed Easton Jr. of the WXRK radio station was certain that Brown would come back to the top of the music business with the title and noted certain similarities between the song and Brown's 2008 single " Forever ". In a review by Billboard magazine , Brown's career was said to have had "twists and turns," but with "Yeah 3x" he proved that he could still deliver a hit. At Yahoo! Music , the author of a review, wrote that the song was a "club-like summer song". However, the single is also a song that "every singer can sing".

Confrontation with Calvin Harris

In October 2010, Scottish music producer and DJ Calvin Harris claimed on his Twitter page that Brown was plagiarizing his 2009 single “ I'm Not Alone ” with his song “Yeah 3x” . Harris' song had at that time one of the charts, inter alia Place UK reached. He literally wrote that he "choked on his cereal this morning when he heard the new Chris Brown single". After receiving all sorts of abusive messages from Brown's fans, he justified himself a few hours later for his allegation. Just because he is relatively unknown is stealing still stealing. It doesn't matter how well known you are. Just because Brown enjoys national fame, it would not be okay to "wipe out a boy from Great Britain whom many people have never heard of". When later asked in an interview if Brown knew him, Harris said no. However, the track's producer, DJ Frank E , would definitely know him. DJ Frank E would have worked together in his past with Tiësto , who is also a DJ. Tiësto in turn made a remix of the song "I'm Not Alone" in 2009. In Harris' opinion, this is likely the link. Harris and Brown later had a conversation in which the latter admitted certain similarities between the two titles. Harris has since been mentioned in the album's booklet as the songwriter of the song.

Live performances

On March 29, 2011, Brown appeared on the American dance show Dancing with the Stars , but his vocal performance had previously been recorded. He sang a next "Yeah 3x" still a medley of the songs " Forever " and " Beautiful People ", which he, however, all playback recited. For his performance Brown earned standing ovations from the jury members and the audience. There had been some controversy before Brown's visit to the show, as one participant, dancer Cheryl Burke , commented negatively about the musician's visit. Since she herself was a victim of domestic violence, she could not agree that Brown, who subjected his then girlfriend Rihanna to physical violence in February 2009 , makes an appearance on the show. Moderator Tom Bergeron was also not very enthusiastic about Brown's appearance. He warned the producers of the show that "it might be an advantage for them not to have to interview Brown." Furthermore, because of his private views, he would have a tendency to say something on the subject. If he were forced to interview Brown on stage, he would bring up the 2009 incident and the one that occurred a few days earlier. He was referring to an incident when he was a guest on the show Good Morning America and freaked out when hostess Robin Robers questioned him about Rihanna. This incident had a lot of media coverage, as Brown was accused of "having learned nothing" after all that happened.

On July 15, 2011, he sang the title in front of an audience of 18,000 as part of a series of concerts on The Today Show at Rockefeller Center in New York City . At that time he also performed the songs " She Ain't You ", " I Can Transform Ya " and " Forever ". Brown also appeared at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards . He opened his performance with “Yeah 3x” before he started dancing to the songs “Protect Ya Neck” by the Wo-Tang Clan and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana . Finally he performed the song " Beautiful People ". The single was also on the set list of the FAME tour .
