"Beautiful People" was written by Chris Brown , Marco Benassi , Alessandro Benassi , Jean Baptiste , with the two Benassi brothers also taking over the production. The song was recorded at The Record Plant , a recording studio in Los Angeles . Even before the album or single was released, the title leaked online on January 16, 2011. The cover, on which Brown puts on a gas mask and looks into the camera, was released on February 2nd. The song was later reused for Benassi's fifth studio album Electroman , which was released in June 2011.

composition

The song is a fast-paced Electro House , Dancehall and Europop song that has also been influenced by contemporary R&B . According to James Dean Wells of AOL Radio , the track "includes pulsating synthesizers that underlay both Browns and Benassi's staccato and auto-tune melodies". Sony / ATV Music Publishing also released data that the single was written in four-four time with an average tempo of 126 beats per minute . It was composed in E flat major . The lyrics were rated as "positive and uplifting". In Rap-Up think it was that the song "encourage everyone on the dance floor to maintain the head and inner beauty to discover." Brown himself also commented on the song, saying that it was "not a selfish title". It is not about him and whether he shows off, brags or talks about cars, money and women. It's about how dance music gives him the opportunity to inspire other people. There are so many tragic things in the world that it has to come together to end the negativity.

Music video

Background and abstract

The clip premiered on March 22, 2011 on The Seven , a former MTV afternoon talk show . The director of the video is unknown. Numerous musicians have guest appearances in the video, including Bow Wow , The Game , Pharrell Williams , Swizz Beatz , T-Pain , Nelly , Tyga , Estelle , Brandy , Omarion , Teyana Taylor , Timbaland , The Rejectz , Big Sean , Ryan Leslie , Diddy and Dallas Austin to see.

The music video begins with a scene in which Brown and his dance group The Rejectz at night with scooters driving through the streets. Then sequences are shown of Brown sitting in the back seat of a car singing and dancing or listening to the song in a recording studio with various famous friends. In the meantime, both Benassi and Brown can be seen performing at different concerts. You can also see Brown and T-Pain dancing in the recording studio. The singer is also shown in front of a nightclub and in front of a wall on which the words "Beautiful People" are shown in the form of a graffito .

reception

Becky Bain from the music blog Idolator rated the music video as "a four-minute statement that Brown still has a bunch of friends". A British newspaper said that Brown's dancing was better than his singing, but it was still pleasant. Entertainment Weekly's Tanner Stransky thought the clip had a “nice concept” and was a departure from Brown's previously “trademarked smooth video”. Another reviewer called the music video "a feel-good journey through Brown's everyday life" and also stated that the images are supposed to show the human side of Brown and his friends.

success

reception

The song was received mostly positively by the critics. For example, Margaret Wappler of the Los Angeles Times wrote that “Beautiful People” almost sounds like a song by Kylie Minogue . This made them mainly due to the “powdery-sweet synthesizers and the dance floor positivity”. The Idolator music blog was of the opinion that the title had nothing to do with the singer. They took the view that any artist could have sung this song without changing the result. Even so, the reviewer liked the single. Other reviewers also noted that Brown had a softer, more empathetic side of himself, and that the lyrics could potentially be inspiring.

Live performances and cover versions

On March 29, 2011, Brown appeared on the American dance show Dancing with the Stars , but his vocal performance had previously been recorded. He sang a next "Yeah 3x" still a medley of the songs " Forever " and "Beautiful People", which he, however, all playback recited. For his performance Brown earned standing ovations from the jury members and the audience. There had been some controversy before Brown's visit to the show, as one participant, dancer Cheryl Burke , commented negatively about the musician's visit. Since she herself was a victim of domestic violence, she could not agree that Brown, who subjected his then girlfriend Rihanna to physical violence in February 2009 , makes an appearance on the show. Moderator Tom Bergeron was also not very enthusiastic about Brown's appearance. He warned the producers of the show that "it might be an advantage for them not to have to interview Brown." Furthermore, because of his private views, he would have a tendency to say something on the subject. If he were forced to interview Brown on stage, he would bring up the 2009 incident and the one that occurred a few days earlier. He was referring to an incident when he was a guest on the show Good Morning America and freaked out when hostess Robin Roberts questioned him about Rihanna. This incident had a lot of media coverage, as Brown was accused of "having learned nothing" after all that happened.

Brown also appeared at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards . He opened his performance with "Yeah 3x" before he began to dance to the songs "Protect Ya Neck" by the Wu-Tang Clan and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana . Most recently he performed “Beautiful People”. The single was also on the set list of the FAME tour .

On December 3, 2011, the British singer Labrinth sang the song during the Jingle Bell Ball , a concert that took place at the O 2 Arena in London .
