Graffiti is the third studio album by US R&B musician Chris Brown . It was released on December 7, 2009 on Jive Records and reached number seven on the Billboard 200 . The songs I Can Transform Ya and Crawl were released from the album .

background

In 2008 Brown began work on his third studio album. In the same year he also announced the name of his new CD. In September 2009, Brown published a message stating that work on the album had ended. In total, around 60 to 70 songs were worked on for the album.

Graffiti is the first album since Brown had a physical argument with then-girlfriend Rihanna at a pre-Grammy party in February 2009 . The incident at the time, in which Chris Brown received a suspended sentence, suffered a great loss of image. Some radio stations therefore also boycotted the singer's music.

Music genre

According to Billboard , the album combines various elements of contemporary R&B , pop music , rock music and eurodance . Greg Kot compared the style of the album to the "cross-genre experiments" of artists like Kanye West , Saul Williams and Lil Wayne . Mikael Wood wrote that most of the CD was "happy party kind".

Publication and promotion

The album was released internationally on December 7, 2009, in the US it was released a day later. The standard version contained 14 songs in Europe and only 13. The deluxe edition of the CD appeared at the same time as the normal standard version. In Europe, the deluxe edition included a CD with six additional songs. In the USA and Japan there were also six other songs, but on a separate CD. In addition, the US version contained the song Movie , which is not available in Europe. The song Chase Our Love can only be found on the European version.

To promote the album, Brown went on the Fan Appreciation Tour , which only included concerts in the USA. The tour began on October 27, 2009 in New Jersey and ended on December 15, 2009 in New York City . A portion of the proceeds from the tour was donated by Brown to two different foundations. One facility supports victims of domestic violence, the other with developmental disabilities.

The album received extremely negative reviews. In the Metascore , it only received 39 out of 100 points based on twelve different ratings. Entertainment Weekly, for example, wrote that Brown had a hard time with his loss of image after the argument with his ex-girlfriend, and that the album could not "magically fix" this, but the CD still "floats" in the best moments. The Los Angeles Times insinuated that Brown wanted to use the incident with Rihanna to his incident. Author Mikael Wood stated that “a handful of lovingly crafted power ballads have apparently been designed to highlight the singer's remorse for the incident.” Allmusic wrote in its review that a couple of the songs made a lasting impression. The Chicago Tribune believed that the song Famous Girl in particular threw the album “off track” and made every note feel “taken advantage of and self-serving”. In addition, Brown's attempt to restore his reputation is damaging it even more. The AV Club said that musically the album was "a pretty flattering affair", the production was clean and often lively, and Brown sang "well enough". The problem is what he sings. Therefore, the magazine gave the album the worst rating.
