She Ain't You is a song by the American singer and songwriter Chris Brown . It was released on March 28, 2011 as the fourth single from Brown's fourth studio album, FAME , after which the title reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 53 on the UK charts. The title sampled, among other things, the song " Human Nature " by Michael Jackson from 1983.

Background and publication

The song was written by Chris Brown, Jean Baptiste, Ryan Buendia, Kevin McCall and Jason Boyd , with Free School producers serving . John Bettis, Steve Porcaro (both "Human Nature") and Brian Morgan ("Right Here") are also among the authors of the title, as "She Ain't You" samples the two songs . The recordings took place at the Red Studios Stadium in New York City and the mixing was done by Brian Springer at The Record Plant , a recording studio in Los Angeles . Amber Streeter of the girl group RichGirl was responsible for the background vocals.

On March 28, 2011, the song was released exclusively for Urban Contemporary Radio , and from April 19, it could also be heard on Rhythmic Contemporary Radio . For the radio format Contemporary Hit Radio , which is based on the official charts, it was available from May 31, 2011.

composition

"She Ain't You" is a medium-speed ballad inspired by R&B and pop music , which has an "electronic and level-headed rhythm ". According to the album booklet, the title samples the song " Human Nature " by Michael Jackson from 1983 and also contains parts of the piece of music " Right Here " and its remix version, sung by the band SWV . You can also hear the beats of a drum kit from the song . Najah Goldstein thought the title was reminiscent of an “R&B love song from the 90s”. Scott Shetler noted that Brown sings in the song about "having made a new girlfriend, but not happy because he still prefers his ex-girlfriend." Another reviewer noticed that the verse "With You I Had a Bad Romance" could be a reference to the song " Bad Romance " by Lady Gaga . She also noted that the title included "slow and pouting vocals".

Music video

Background and abstract

The video was shot by Colin Tilley , who has worked with Brown many times in this capacity. It was shown for the first time on May 2, 2011. Throughout the video, Brown pays tribute to the American entertainer Michael Jackson , which is reflected in the imitation of his dance moves, among other things.

The video begins with a dedication: “Dedicated to my biggest inspiration of all time… I Love You. RIP Michael Jackson. 08/29/58 - 06/25/09. “(Eng .: Dedicated to my greatest inspiration ever ... I love you. RIP Michael Jackson. 08/29/58 - 06/25/09.). Then you see Brown, dressed in a white suit from the 1980s and a felt hat, dancing a choreography with some dancers in front of a wall illuminated with neon light. The clothes are very reminiscent of the Jacksons in the video for his single " Smooth Criminal ". Between these scenes you see Brown in a black suit dancing in front of a dark cloud background. Amber Streeter and Brown are both in the picture during the chorus, surrounded by golden butterflies. At the end of the video, Brown appears to be flying through the air.

reception

A reviewer for Rap-Up magazine said Brown was doing what he did best while watching the video - dancing. Anthony Osei of Complex magazine wrote that "if anyone can do a great homage to Michael Jackson, it's definitely Chris Brown." The website Idolator rated the video as "mildly pleasant". Brad Wete of Entertainment Weekly was impressed by Brown's dancing skills and called them "gigantic". He also wrote in his review that “you get embarrassed if you want to find a singer in the market with enough dancing quality to even attempt a proper Michael Jackson homage. Brown is one of the few - if not the only one. "

success

reception

The song received mixed reviews, for example the lyrics of the song were often referred to as "unsympathetic". Najah Goldstein noted in her review that Brown showed a "much softer side" of himself. In addition, the song is definitely suitable for women, according to Goldstein "maybe even for Rihanna ". In a review for the Boston Globe newspaper , the title was "totally outrageous and totally effective" as it derives much of its charm from sampling Michael Jackson's song "Human Nature" . Margaret Wappler of the Los Angeles Times rated the mood of the single as "pleasantly multi-layered". Another reviewer described "She Ain't You" as "a sweet and cute love song". Sean Fennessey made his review of Jackson and Brown. For example, he wrote that Jackson had long been Brown's emotional, physical, and musical role model. With this title, Brown finally begs for a comparison of the two artists, whom the reviewer described as "not beautiful".
