Chris Brown is the debut album by the R&B singer of the same name . It was released on November 29, 2005 in the USA on the Jive Records label and placed second on the Billboard 200 . The album reached number 31 in Germany. A total of five songs were released: Run It! ' Yo (Excuse Me Miss) , Gimme That , Say Goodbye and Poppin' .

Brown was discovered at his father's gas station in 2002, at the age of 13, by local record producer Hitmission Records who were looking for talent. Lamont Fleming , of Hitmission Records , organized singing lessons for Brown, the team also helped create demo recordings, and cultivated contacts in New York City to secure a record deal. Through Tina Davis , then the senior A&R of Def Jam Recordings , Brown finally managed to get a contract. In December 2004, Brown signed a recording deal with the record label Jive Records . He then started recording his first studio album in February 2005. Brown was just 15 years old at the time.

Singles

The first single was the song Run It! published, in which Juelz Santana also participated. It reached number one on the Hot 100 airplay charts. Once released, the song also climbed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 , so Brown's first ever release hit the top of the US charts, where it lasted for five weeks. The singer was then 16 years old. In Germany the song placed fifth.

On December 13, 2005, the second single, Yo (Excuse Me Miss) was released . It also entered the top 10 of the American charts, reaching number seven. In Germany, the song was only ranked 56th.

The third single Gimme That was selected, the song was released on April 4, 2006. However, a remix version of the title was released, in which rapper Lil Wayne was involved, and which is not on the American version of the album, but it is on the international title list. The song was ranked 15th in the United States.

On August 8, 2006, they released the fourth single from the album, Say Goodbye , which placed at number ten in the United States. The song was the first release from the album, which could not place in the German charts.

The fifth and final single, Poppin ' , was released on November 21, 2006 and only reached number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 . It was the most unsuccessful single on the album in the US.

Publication and promotion

The singer's debut album was released in America on November 29, 2005, and it was released in Germany in February 2006. There are two different track lists on the album, one national (USA) and one international. The national version comprised 16 songs, the international 18 songs. The tracks So Glad , Seen the Light and the remix of Gimme That are not on the US version.

The album was promoted with the Up Close and Personal Tour , the artist's first headlining tour. In the winter, Brown also joined as the opening act on the Scream V Encore Tour .

In June 2006 the first DVD by Chris Brown was released in the USA, which was called Chris Brown's Journey . A month later it also appeared in Germany. The DVD, which was also released as DualDisc , contained a documentary that included music videos for the songs Run It! , Yo (Excuse Me Miss) and Gimme That (Remix) , the “making-ofs” of these videos, two live performances and more. The songs “So Glad” and “Yo (Excuse Me Miss) (DJ Dime Remix)” can also be found on the DVD / CD. The DVD was awarded a gold record in August 2006 .

Commercial win

With 154,000 records sold in the first week, Chris Brown's debut album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 . In December 2006, RIAA certified the album with two times platinum for 2 million units sold in the USA, in January of that year it had already received a normal platinum award. By March 2011, the album had sold approximately 2,179,000 times in the US alone.

reception

The album got average reviews. Allmusic wrote that the album was more suitable for people under the age of 18. Also, writer Andy Kellman felt that some fans would be "embarrassed" to own this CD. He also said that Brown had a "refreshing charisma" that was neither "as family-friendly as Will Smith , nor as comedically vulgar as Pretty Ricky ."

In 2007 the album was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Contemporary R&B Album , but where it lost to B'Day by Beyoncé Knowles .
