Structure of a DualDisc

The DualDisc is a hybrid of CD and DVD : one side can be used as an audio CD , the other as a DVD. DualDiscs are particularly suitable as data carriers for music: one side can be played as a music CD, the DVD side can contain music videos and also photos , lyrics , hyperlinks and advertising for other products or music with more than two channels .

The CD side of DualDiscs is 0.9 mm instead of at least 1.1 mm thinner than the standard applicable for audio CDs ( Red Book ), which is why not every CD player can play DualDiscs. DualDiscs therefore do not have an audio CD logo.

Comparable formats

A direct competing format is the Super Audio Compact Disc , which only uses one side, but requires two layers and special reading optics. In contrast to the DualDisc, this means that an SACD can be printed on one side like conventional CDs and DVDs, but it is far from being playable in all commercially available DVD players.

Another competing development is the DVDplus , which Dieter Dierks developed and had patented. In order to avoid patent disputes, DualDisc manufacturers in Europe generally pay license fees to Dierks.

DualDisc in Germany

The first DualDisc in Germany appeared on July 11, 2005: The German Music Council and the WERGO label used the DualDisc as a medium for the first time in their “Edition Zeitgenössische Musik” series for works by Stephan Winkler and Jesko Marx . Stephan Winkler's musical works can be found on the CD side, while the 20-minute musical film "ZigZag - Pi mal r square" by Jesko Marx can be seen on the DVD side.

In 2006 the German rock band "Planlos" released the DualDisc "Live Im Tor 3". On the DVD side there was a recording of the concert on May 27, 2005 from the Düsseldorf "Gate 3". On the audio CD side was a slightly shortened audio recording of the same concert.

This format is now also used occasionally for limited editions or premium editions of pop music, e.g. B. Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth (Limited Tour Edition) , Bon Jovi - Have A Nice Day or the best-of-album Collected by Massive Attack . In addition to the actual Best-Of CD, a dual disc is included, which contains alternative versions, remixes and previously unreleased tracks on the CD side, and all of the band's videos on their songs on the DVD side. In addition, the German rock band Böhse Onkelz released the live album 20 Years - Live in Frankfurt in October 2001 in the form of a dual disc with two CDs and two DVDs.
