Muhammad Nadschi al-Utri (* 1944 in Aleppo ; Arabic محمد ناجي العطري, DMG Muḥammad Nāǧī al-ʿUṭrī ; also Mohammad Otri ) was Prime Minister of Syria from September 10, 2003 to March 29, 2011 .

Life

Muhammad Nadschi al-Utri completed his mechanical engineering studies in Aleppo in 1967 and his architecture studies in the Netherlands in 1972 . He was chairman of the Aleppo City Council from 1983 to 1987, chairman of the Aleppo Engineers Association from 1989 to 1993 and governor ( muḥāfiz ) of Homs from 1993 to 2000.

In March 2000 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Ba'ath Party and at the same time Vice Prime Minister. In June of the same year he became a member of the Ba'ath Party's "regional command", the party's top governing body. He was elected Speaker of the Syrian Parliament in March 2003, a post he held until September 2003. He is a long-time member of the Ba'ath Party and speaks fluent English and French.

al-Utri and his cabinet resigned on March 29, 2011 in the wake of the 2011 protests in Syria .

Muhammad Naji al-Utri is married and has four children.
