Said al-Ghazzi ; Arabic سعيد الغزي; (* 1893 in Damascus , Vilâyet Syria ; † September 18, 1967 ) was a Syrian lawyer and politician. He was two-time Prime Minister of the Syrian Republic and is known in Syrian politics as an independent liberal , which made him a favorite in all times of crisis.

Career

Before the Sunnit Ghazzi entered politics, he was one of the leading lawyers in Syria . He joined the Bloc national in 1928 , which rejected the French mandate over Syria . He was appointed a member of the Constituent Assembly under Ibrahim Hananu , which drafted the first constitution in Republican Syria . Ghazzi received his first cabinet office in 1936. Prime Minister Jamil Mardam Bey appointed him Minister of Justice. He held this position in two other cabinets in 1945 and 1948. He also served as Minister of Finance in 1939.

In the early years of Shukri al-Quwatli's presidency, Ghazzi served as Vice-President of the Syrian Parliament , but in the early 1940s he lost nationalist support as he supported President Taj Eddine el-Hasani , who was appointed by the French . In 1943 he rejoined the Nationalists and was re-elected on Quwatli's electoral roll.

Prime Minister

After the overthrow of the military dictator Adib al-Shishakli , Ghazzi formed his first cabinet on June 19, 1954, in which he also served as Minister of Defense. Ghazzi’s primary goal was to keep the army in their barracks and to put an end to the civil-military enmity that was created by his predecessor Sabri al-Asali . After the parliamentary elections in 1954 , he asked President Hashim al-Atassi to resign on November 3 and continued to work as a lawyer.

In September 1955, Ghazzi was reassigned to form a government by President Shukri al-Quwatli, and he accepted. During his second term in office, Ghazzi did his best to persuade two elements to stabilize the nation: the military establishment and Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt . He also worked to keep Syria within the Eastern Bloc , announcing Syria's new friendship with the Soviet Union, as well as arms and trade deals with other Eastern Bloc countries. His cabinet collapsed on June 14, 1956 due to strong popular opposition to his close ties with Nasser and the USSR.

Next life

Ghazzi retired from public life under the short-lived United Arab Republic . In the Syrian Republic , re-established in 1961 , he became President of Parliament on September 17, 1962. He was also the last speaker of parliament of the Syrian Republic, since the Ba'ath party put on a coup on March 7, 1963 and came to power.
