General election in Syria in 1954
Parliamentary elections were held in Syria on September 24th and 25th, 1954 , with a second round between October 4th and 5th. It was a democratic election in what was then the Syrian Republic .
Independent candidates became the largest bloc in parliament after the election, while the People's Party under Nazem Koudsi became the largest single party with 30 seats. The Muslim Brotherhood did not run as such. There were 54 independents, some of whom were affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and other parties, which explains the discrepancies in the results of different blocs. There were also nine tribal seats. There were a total of 140 to 142 MPs.
