General election in Syria in 1953
On 9 October 1953 were in Syria parliamentary elections held. At that time the country was under the repressive one-party rule of Adib al-Shishakli .
The result was a victory for the Arab Liberation Movement , which won 72 of the 82 seats.
The People's Party and the National Bloc were banned and prevented from continuing to work. Most of their leaders were imprisoned or placed under house arrest under Adib al-Shishakli's regime, which came to power in a coup three years earlier.
