Parliamentary election in Syria 2003
Parliamentary elections were held in Syria on March 5, 2003 . It was the first People's Council elections to be held under the new President Bashar al-Assad . The number of seats that the ruling National Progress Front received was 167, while the Independents received 83 seats. The Ba'ath Party alone won 135 seats (126 are required for an absolute majority). The turnout was 63%. After the election, Muhammad Naji al-Utri was appointed Prime Minister.
