Presidential election in Syria 2007
A referendum on the acceptance of the presidential candidate Bashar al-Assad was held in Syria on May 27, 2007 after the People's Council voted to propose the incumbent for a second term on May 10, 2007.
According to the 1973 Syrian Constitution , the Ba'ath Arab Socialist Party was the leader of state and society, and therefore the president had to be a member of the party. The National Progress Front , a political coalition led by the Ba'ath Party, nominates a candidate in parliament, the People's Council. The candidate must be approved by at least two thirds of the members so that the next step is a referendum, in which a candidate must receive at least 51% of the votes.
Result
According to Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majeed , Assad won with 97.62 percent of the vote. The election was boycotted by the opposition in exile, manipulated and called a "farce".
