The Herald Sun is the largest daily newspaper in Australia with 551,100 readers on weekdays.

history

The newspaper "Herald Sun" was founded in 1990 from the merger of the morning newspaper The Sun News-Pictorial and the evening newspaper The Herald . The first edition was published on October 8, 1990 as The Herald-Sun . The hyphen was later removed from the title. The last edition with the old logo was sold on May 1, 1993.

The Herald

The Herald was founded on January 3, 1840 by George Cavanaugh as The Port Phillip Herald . In 1855, The Melbourne Herald newspaper became The Melbourne Herald , but only for a week before it was renamed The Herald . From 1869 it was an evening newspaper.

The Sun News-Pictorial

The Sun News-Pictorial was founded on September 11, 1922, and was purchased by HWT in 1925.

The merger

In its heyday, The Herald had a circulation of almost 600,000 readers, but by 1990, when the newspaper was 150 years old, the number of readers had dropped to just 200,000. That put it way behind the Sun.

After 150 years, ten months and two days, The Herald was sold for the last time as an independent newspaper on October 5, 1990. A day later, The Sun News-Pictorial also published its final issue. Shortly before, the Sunday editions of both newspapers had already started working together.

criticism

The Herald Sun is accused of having a lot of bias for the Liberal Party of Australia . Critics also accuse the newspaper of implementing the conservative attitude of its owner, the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch , without questioning it.

Shortly before the federal elections in 2004 published Herald Sun published an article entitled "Greens back illegal drugs" ( "The Greens are for illegal drugs", Herald Sun , August 31, 2004), written by Gerard McManus, with numerous accusations against the Australian Greens regarding their political program. The Greens then complained to the Australian Press Council . The Press Council gave the Herald Sun a sharp reprimand for the article.

Conservative columnist Andrew Bolt , in particular, has also caused a lot of controversy. 2011 ruled Australia Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Australia that Bolt in two written by him articles in the Herald Sun against the Racial Discrimination Act has failed.
