Racial Discrimination Act

The Racial Discrimination Act is a law passed by the Australian Parliament in 1975 during the tenure of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam ( Australian Labor Party ).

Racial discrimination has been declared illegal in Australia by this law. It takes precedence over state or territory law. The Racial Discrimination Act was passed after Australia signed the International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination . The validity of the law was upheld by the High Court of Australia in its 1982 judgment in the Koowarta case .
