The Federal Court of Australia is a supreme court in Australia ; a Federal Court of Justice, which is responsible for legal disputes of civil and state law of the respective federal states. The responsibility includes - in addition to civil matters - even parts of family law and criminal law and the Native Titles . It was established by the Federal Court of Australia Act 1976 .

Legal cases are heard in the first instance before a judge. Appeals against first instance judgments are heard by the so-called Full Court , which consists of three judges, and appeal hearings are decided by the High Court of Australia .

The Federal Court of Australia is divided into two divisions, the General Division and the Fair Work Division . Its branches are located in all the capitals of the federal states of Australia and from time to time in other locations.

The Federal Court of Australia also maintains registers and tribunals (German: criminal courts ): The criminal courts are the Australian Competition Tribunal , Copyright Tribunal of Australia and the Defense Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal . Australian trade unions are registered by the Industrial Relations Court of Australia , which is currently being administered there until this court is fully established.
