Ester Renay Dean (* 15. April 1982 in Muskogee , Oklahoma ) is an American R & B - singer and songwriter .

Life

Ester Dean tried already in her youth to make a career as a singer. When she was cleaning clinics in Atlanta but kept getting turned away, she gave up on her dream. Instead, she accepted the offer to work as a songwriter. She soon made a name for herself in it and wrote songs for Ciara , Rihanna , Mary J. Blige and other stars. Eventually she was encouraged again to try her own singing career. She sang on songs by Jeremih and Gucci Mane and made her first own release in mid-2009 with musician Chris Brown . The song Drop It Low reached the top 40 on the US charts. She speaks in Ice Age 4 - Fully Moved, the girlfriend of the sloth Sid.

As a songwriter, Ester Dean has already written songs for Britney Spears , Rihanna , Mary J. Blige , Monica , Keri Hilson , Keyshia Cole , Kelly Rowland , Girlicious, Esmée Denters , Katy Perry , Nicole Scherzinger , Jennifer Lopez , Jennifer Hudson , Neon Hitch , Sean Kingston , Jesse McCartney , Scotty McCreery , Clyde McKnight, Trey Songz , Mýa , Lloyd, Ludacris , Robin Thicke , Ciara , Usher , Chris Brown , Nicki Minaj , Nelly , Flo Rida , Dr. Dre , Juelz Santana , Soulja Boy , Paradiso Girls, Pussycat Dolls , Pia Toscano, Teyana Taylor , TI , Tinie Tempah , Beyoncé Knowles and Christina Aguilera . Her greatest successes as a songwriter are Aguilera's Not Myself Tonight , Woohoo , Minaj's Super Bass , Rihanna's Rude Boy , What's My Name? , S&M and Scherzingers Right There . By early 2012, five of the songs she wrote were number 1 on the US Billboard charts.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

method

Dean is considered an outstanding top liner . She designs melodies, hooklines and texts based on the basic musical patterns presented to her by music producers.

“Dean has a knack for contagious hooks. Somehow she can pick up the beat and the sound of a track and find the melodic core to it. The words are more rhythmic vocalizations than texts and they convey less meaning than feelings and energy. "

According to her own statements, she hears the tracks in front of the microphone in the studio for the first time. She screams, sings and screeches spontaneously. Sometimes words come, mostly not. If she feels a tingling sensation in her arms, she's found a hook. If there is no tingling after five minutes, she jumps to the next track . The hook is followed by elements of the lyrics. In doing so, she calls up a list of prepared sentence fragments and word groups that she has gathered from the media. With this spontaneous vocalization, the recording software runs on auto-tune , so it doesn't matter that it hits notes and melodies. In the course of a few minutes, song elements emerge from the free brainstorming. Lines of text fit perfectly with the rhythm, harmony and melody emerging.

Then the producers take over: They cut a song structure from the individual elements. One part becomes the intro, verses, a refrain and connecting elements emerge. Finally, Dean revises the text elements again and sings the song as a demo . This is presented to agents of eligible artists who purchase the song.
