Brian Todd Collins (* 1. April 1986 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American rapper , R & B - singer , producer and songwriter . He is known by his stage name Kid Ink , which alludes to his numerous tattoos .

Career

2010–2012: Musical beginnings, first success: Up & Away

Collins first became known through the Mixtape World Tour , which he published under the pseudonym Rockstar in February 2010. DJ ill Will worked as a producer, who signed him to his independent label "Tha Alumni Group" after the success of the mixtape. Collins then changed his stage name to Kid Ink for the first time . On November 15th, his second mixtape, Crash Landing, was released under his new pseudonym. In summer 2011 the mixtape Daydreamer was released for free download on various websites. Well-known guest musicians such as Meek Mill and Tyga appeared on this tape for the first time . Shortly afterwards, his third mixtape was released, entitled Wheels Up , which includes recordings with, among others, 2 Chainz , Macklemore and Sean Kingston .

On June 12, 2012, Kid Ink released the independent album Up & Away . This album became his first chart success. It rose to number 20 in the United States and number 78 in Canada. Several songs on the album were released as single. The most successful release was the track Time of Your Life . The song was produced by Ned Cameron. The second single, Lost in the Sauce, followed shortly thereafter.

On November 21, 2012, Kid Ink released another mixtape called Rocketshipshawty . This mixtape, like the previous ones, was only intended as a promo and therefore made available for download. He produced it during and after his European tour.

2013–2014: Almost Home & My Own Lane

On May 28, 2013, an EP called Almost Home was released . She achieved numerous chart positions, including several top 10 successes in the R&B and rap charts in the USA, as well as in various Black charts in Great Britain. Almost Home also reached the top 50 in the official US album charts . The title Bad Ass of the album Almost Home was the first single and was released on January 22, 2013, reached number 90 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Although the song Money and the Power was not released as a single, it also reached the through several downloads Charts. In Germany it moved up to 70th place.

On January 7, 2014, Kid Ink released his first album entitled My Own Lane under RCA . Well-known musicians such as Tyga ( Iz U Down ), Chris Brown ( Show Me & Main Chick ) and Machine Gun Kelly ( No Miracles ) had guest appearances on this album . My Own Lane climbed into the charts of numerous countries and reached number 12 in the German album, number 8 in the Swiss and number 3 in the US album charts. Even before the album was released, the song Show Me , which Kid Ink recorded with Chris Brown, was released as a single. The song also climbed high in the singles charts and was awarded both gold and platinum records for several million sales. Although the songs Iz U Down with Tyga and Main Chick with Chris Brown did not appear as a single for the time being, they reached the German single charts due to strong download sales. His mixtape Batgang: 4B’s was released on August 25th and made available online for free download.

On September 8, 2014, Kid Ink, in collaboration with R&B singer Usher and singer Tinashe, released the song Body Language , which was in the German single charts after just one week. The music video has already been shot. The track is said to be the announcement for his second studio album, which will be released in 2015. Furthermore, an official remix of the song Rude by the Canadian reggae band Magic was released together with Ty Dolla $ ign and Travis Barker .

2015: Full speed & successful guest contributions

The official confirmation that a new album would be released was given by Kid Ink at the end of 2014. In December 2014, a trailer for the official music video of the song Cool Back was also released. The track was released in parallel to the publication of the tracklist for the album Full Speed on December 15, 2014 as a full version including a music video on YouTube. A single was not released. The album was made available for pre-sale on December 15, 2014 on iTunes. The official release date was January 30, 2015.

On December 25, 2014, the song Blunted was also released as a download on the digital version of Full Speed . The music video came out the same day. The song Hotel was released on January 9, 2015 as the subsequent digital pre-release single . Was added Hotel in collaboration with Chris Brown. The song advanced to the top 3 on the German iTunes chart. The next iTunes single Like a Hott Boyy was also a success.

The last song released for download, Be Real , even surpassed the success of Hotel and was number 1 on the German iTunes charts after just one day. American rapper Dej Loaf contributed vocals to the track. Just a week after its release, the album was high in the official album charts of numerous countries and songs like Dolo together with R. Kelly also reached the official single charts through high download sales alone. On August 6, 2015, Dolo was decoupled as a straggler as a single, which, however, could not achieve any great success.

Together with the US girl group Fifth Harmony , Kid Ink released the song Worth It in March 2015 , which made it into the top 10 of over 15 countries and sold over four million times. The official music video, in which Kid Ink also plays, already had over a billion clicks on YouTube after a year. Shortly thereafter, a collaboration with the Norwegian hip-hop duo Nico & Vinz and the American singer Bebe Rexha appeared . The song is titled That's How You Know and achieved international success with chart placements in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. The track achieved platinum status in Australia and gold status in New Zealand.

2015–2016: Ride Out & Summer in the Winter

On February 16, 2015, the song Ride Out appeared in collaboration with Rich Homie Quan , YG , Tyga and Wale on the Internet without any prior promotion . The official music video also premiered on the same day. Few websites reported the official title track of Fast & Furious 7 a few days earlier . Both the lyrics and the music video, which shows scenes from the film, allude to them. The song was a great success and advanced to the top 30 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, among others.

At the end of November 2015, Kid Ink announced the release of a seventh mixtape. It was published on December 25, 2015 under the title Summer in the Winter . The songs Rewind , in which the American singer Akon took part, and the song Promise , which was created in collaboration with newcomer Fetty Wap and is the first single on the album, enjoyed great popularity . It made the jump into the US singles chart and was awarded gold for half a million units sold. The album, however, could not follow the success of its predecessors. In addition, in contrast to My Own Lane and Full Speed , Kid Ink worked less with well-known and successful musicians.

On August 7, 2016, the song Nasty was released in collaboration with singer and rapper Jeremih and Spice . September 20, 2016 he released the mixtape Rocketshipshawty 2 . This featured collaborations with, among others, Juliann Alexander and Jeremih. A month later, the song One Day was released as the first single release. This should reflect the beginning of his career. A music video was also shot for the song Die In It .

2017: 7 series & guest contributions in the EDM scene

In early 2017, the song Swish , a collaboration with 2 Chainz , was released, which was the first single from the EP 7 Series . The song F with U followed as the second official single. This was recorded in collaboration with Ty Dolla $ ign and reached number 52 on the US singles chart.

On January 27, 2017, the Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike released a new version of their song Hey Baby together with Diplo and Kid Ink , with which they could again enter the German single charts and also top the Belgian single Charts lingered. A joint music video with Kid Ink was also released. With Hey Baby he could be heard in an EDM production for the first time since the 2014 single Delirious with Steve Aoki , Tujamo and Chris Lake .

On February 10, 2017, the joint track I Love You was released with the Swedish DJ duo Axwell ross Ingrosso . This represents a mixture of electro house and electro pop and jumped into the charts of numerous download portals shortly after publication. The chorus is based on a violin sample based on Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve . Also in February 2017, a remix of the Little Mix single Touch was released , on which an additional part by Kid Ink can be heard.

After the two promo singles Lottery and Supersoaka , the EP 7 Series was released in May 2017 , with which he was able to place in the US album charts. Separately from the EP, Kid Ink released the song Now It's Personal , which was part of the soundtrack of the video game Tekken 7 . The song Bad Habit , which was released as a promo single, followed at the end of 2017 .

2018: Missed Calls

On January 5, 2018, the single Tell Somebody was released , with which he musically oriented himself in a different direction. In an interview with "HipHopDXe" he named the birth of his daughter as the reason for the new development. In May 2018 the song One Time followed , which acts as the soundtrack for the Air Jordan documentary "Unbanned: The Legend Of AJ1".

On June 15, 2018, Kid Ink released the song Woop Woop , which he said was intended as a summer song, which is also alluded to in the music video shot in Jamaica. The track was produced by Charlie Handsome and Rex Kudo.

The single Big Deal was released on August 3, 2018 . This corresponded to a much more aggressive style than its predecessor. The musician team Bankroll Got It was involved as a producer. The song marked the beginning of his upcoming EP Missed Calls . The official music video followed on September 23, 2018. Cana followed on August 17, 2018, a collaboration with the American rapper Robert Davis alias 24hrs.

No Budget was released on November 2, 2018 as the second and final pre-release single from the EP. This is a collaboration with Rich The Kid. Missed Calls was released as a 7-track EP on December 14, 2018. It included collaborations with Lil Wayne , Saweetie and Valee. Both the Extended Play and the singles that preceded it could not follow the success of Full Speed and its decoupling.
